jonesey 2
just a question on pre-ban which i thought could be interesting. anyone ever run a wolfhound cross (obviosly majority croosed with a racier dog such as greyhound or deerhound) on the bigger stuff preban?? would obviously as i said be crossed along more racier lines but i thought it could be a good dog for fallow or sika for example if made out of the [bANNED TEXT] stuff? cheers Quote Link to post

chartpolski 23,562
The moder Irish Wolfhound is a modern breed, as the origional Wolfhound died out with the wolf in these Isles ! The modern dog was/is a result of crossing the Deerhound/Great Dane and Masstif. In this country they are worse than useless..... they are known as "Heartbreak Dogs", because of their short lives and propensity to disease, especialy cancer ! Fair do's; in Australia, they are crossed with other dogs; 'Danes, Bulls, etct, as pig dogs... but here in the UK they are simply VERY expensive pets !! Delta with an Irish Wolfhound. You can tell by the look on her face, she thought I was going to use him as a stud over her !! LOL !! Cheers. 2 Quote Link to post

Hes lifted 14 rabbits in one night with it. turning doesnt seem to be bad although of course not as tight as a whippet type dog Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
Here's a tale of the Wolfhound cross.. Many years ago we were doin a bit of freelance for the landlord of a pub that may be known to a few who went to The Cup, called The Running Horses. He was doing a nice line in game pie and we supplied the ingredients! Anyways, a nice couple who frequented the pub had a Wolfhound dog and at that time the boozer was well frequented by those 'in the game' and the chance of a coursing puppy came up from one of the lads. They took it, a bonny little bitch, bred in the pink from some very well bred old school coursing hounds that are mentioned frequently on here. I recon they were a little bit 'good life' and wanted to emulate the stories that came up nightly. The puppy they took was never really worked and within her first year was 'cought' by the Wolfhound. From what I remember they all went to pet homes but the couple kept a dog back and he grew to be a big strong Deerhoundy lookin thing, real nice to look at. Like the coursing bitch he grew and was never really worked and from our nights in the pub they asked us if we'd take him out, 'because he needs it'! To be fair, they'd ran a hare or two with him, though it wouldn't be hard living on the borders of the most famouse coursing estate in the world..! We were pursuaded to take him out, though that wasn't that hard, as our own mutts were well under the cosh and lurchers were few and far between back then. So why not, you never know, if it can run... Well run it could, in straight lines, getting right up the arse of even the furthest hares, a slow start but a big stride but then the turn... Oh Jesus! i've never seen a dog turn so bad and just lose sight on its effort to get round. It'd bounce, head up, those big paws pounding the ground, completly lost on its sight of the quarry. The poor fecker tried and tried, we gave it every chance, both because it done so well on the run up and that the couple wanted to hear success on our return. They belived in 'the big donk' but just about every time the same, it went on for week after week! Even on that good run up, it just didn't seem 'nimble' enough to snach a hare up and never did and because it was our own doing for saying 'yes', as much as he was a real nice dog, I really started to despise him for his inability and stopped taking him out, sadly to say, lying to the couple about his efforts and steering well clear of 'em at every opportunity!! Thats my thoughts on the cross, all be it a tale but thats all i have... 2 Quote Link to post
