new to ferreting, need some advice!!!!

Hi, my O/H is looking for ferrets to work and as pets, firstly, should we get more than 1?

secondly, what type/sex should we go for??

Thirdly, what equipment will he need to get started?

 

He is an experienced shooter and has lots of shooting access and wants to ferret too.

 

Any advice would be much appreciated as i'd like to surprise him for xmas

Firstly get more than one ferret they like company to play with ect

Secondly sex is each too there own I have jills but that just what I like but if you get jills ( female ) you will have to think about when they come into season they will need the Jill jab thirdly to get started you will need ferrets nets purse nets will get you start locater in my opinion but some don't use they and a good size hutch or court

yes get mor then 1 any sex but hobs will have to be separated in the summer they might fight

 

say 20 nets to get started a ferret box to carry the ferrets a ferret finder if you can afford one a spade folding saw so you can cut back the under growth

best advice i could give you is to sort out a days ferreting for him. going out and being with the lads who are doing it will give him a much better idea of what he needs to have.

 

basics

 

a ferret, i prefer males (hobs) 1 or 2

hutch, double if you want 2 males as they can fight so need to be separated, even though most of the time there fine together.

ferret box, for carrying them around.

nets, decent quality ones around 25 is a good amount to get you going.

ferret locator!, a bit of kit ide never go with out.

spade, to dig to the ferret when needed.

 

theres loads of smaller things thats very handy to have on a day out but there the basics, ive probably for got to list a couple.

the most expensive part is probably the locator but its priceless in the field! my OPINION is never go without one, if you value your ferret and want to make sure you take it home at the end of the day.

 

a ferret that kills in first thing on a morning can spoil your whole day if you carnt find it to dig it out.

 

and go spun poly or 8oz/10oz nylon for the nets, hemps ok but you have to take more care of them and dry them out at the end of the day. stay away from 4oz nylon nets! nothing but a pain in the ass.

its always cheaper to go secondhand and there are good deals to be had! but its up to you if you take the risk or not.

 

try to get it off someone trust worthy as possible. buying blind off say ebay and you might get something someone has sold cause theres a problem.

 

buy new will be more money but you get the piece of mind of a warranty and some were to go if it goes wrong.

 

its very rear i buy new gear as most of it is so expensive but i know what im looking for and what it should do, even so ive been caught out a couple of times trusting ppl and buying blind off the internet!

 

good luck, and get your self out with him you will enjoy it as much as him and end up wanting your own ferret! lol.
