skycat 6,173
It's more than just a question of speed or brain: need drive as well. All speed and drive with no brain equals dead dog. Too slow with too much brain equals useless dog. Just enough speed with mega drive and brain to figure out prey is better than just enough speed and too much brain with little drive. IMO its all a matter of getting each thing in the right quantity. Now my Airedale lurcher isn't the fastest thing on four legs, but she has massive drive and brains to match, so she's learning to read the quarry and put herself in the right place, learning to outwit the quarry to get on terms. A tad more speed would have been nice, but she's getting there with the right combination of drive and brains. I've had several mega fast dogs kill themselves both day and night: I'd sooner have something a bit slower with brains and common sense. 5 Quote Link to post
BrianSteven72 369
speed and plenty of it with a little bit of brains Quote Link to post
Guest born to run1083
I agree with sky cat but some dogs are just way to clever lol I'm starting to hate my first x collie grey in certain situations As she lacks the pace I sometimes would like and boxes rabbits off like skycat describes by outwitting them but There's slow then there's really slow lol Depends where I hunt her to how it much it becomes a disadvantage. bird 9,970
I like speed; a dog will develop "brains" with experience, but it won't get any faster ! Cheers. spot on most thing in the UK that were run are fast, so speed 1st and how clever as it (really) to be catch a rabbit .? Quote Link to post

mighty celt 996
a fast dog will learn how 2 slow down after plenty of graft and use its head abit more.where a medium speed dog with brains will never have the gears 1 Quote Link to post

morton 5,368
Ive owned speed machines in the past, they were handy on big open land but a liability nearly everywhere else, they seldom put as much in the bag as the dogs with enough pace and grey matter. 1 Quote Link to post
