Distemper outbreak

Recommended Posts

Copied this from another forum thought maybe be a good move to give those affected a heads up just in case.its a horrible disease seen it in dogs in vets and from one we took to vets not pleasant whatsoever

DISTEMPER OUTBREAK - Please Read if you're in UK- will you please warn all of your dog walkers about the distemper outbreak and to make sure their dogs are vaccinated. It is in South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, South Staffordshire, and parts of Southern and Eastern England. It has now reached Derby - 17 ferrets have had to be PTS in Derby with distemper. Several of these have been out and about in Derby before showing symptoms so everyone needs to be aware that it is about..

:hmm: OK these reports are all over the ferret sights about distemper

So there must be members on here in these locations mentioned, surely they would of heard of dogs with distemper in their local area? :hmm:

We have heard about these reports, and the North East Ferret Rescue show was cancelled to be on the safe side. We have not found any vet though that has come across any confirmed case of it, for many years. Not in the North anyway.

thats it mate, they have enough things in the field that could kill them running 35mph in the dark, so £70 a year for 2 dogs aint nothing really to stop the dogs being ill

Theres been a couple of confirmed cases in stoke a few months ago, these dogs came out of one of the dog pounds in to rescue.

i know with ferrets its spreading, a friend of mine who runs ferret rescue has had to shut her doors,

as shes lost a few to distemper.

Yeah i was away for a bit was busy re decorating and the dogs and me have had a lot of work thrown our way lately as well so not had time to come on much really.Mine are jabbed as well bird cats dogs the lot.I actually asked the vet about boosters and she had said years ago they really only needed a booster every few years but now theyve changed the make up of the jabs so a yearly booster is required for ull protection so mine get done every year without fail. Most folks dont get their ferrets jabbed weve seen a few lost to it in this area a few years back and i panicked and got mine done i didnt know at the time ferrets got jabbed for it but i got mine done for the full whack even cat flu.The other reason i make sure theyre up to date is lepto is transferable from dogs to humans and i dont fancy a dose of leto plus im not insured if theyre not jabbed either it actually voids your insurance for the dogs if they get say parvo and theyre jabs aint up to date the whole policys in the bin and your paying a massive bill.Had Storm down the vets the other day cos a guy kicked him he tried a few times drunk off course and third time unlucky cos Storm bit back and then took a flakey in the house he was super stressed had to spend half the night in his crate cos he wouldnt even lie down just kept sitting in a tiny space between the pc and the door.I called the cops and told them myself and they managed to find out who he was and he doesnt want to press charges cos he would be charged on same token they want press charges on him either. We seen him yesterday again and hes dragging his leg so hope it fecking hurts silly Bar steward.

so only a couple of cases of distemper in dogs throughout the country??? I find it odd how little most vets know about ferret health(and how little medication is actually licensed for ferrets)but an epidemic breaks out in ferrets with very few dogs affected???Cynical? You bet

These rescues being struck down by this"virus" are going flat out cleaning their places out, scrubbing and disinfectant everything. On another thread about this topic a photo was put up of a ferret supposedly confirmed as having distemper, its eyes were closed YES but not gunged up,nose was wet but NOT muccus running from it,its skin was blotchy Yes ALL SYMPTONS OF BEING IN CONTACT WITH A PHENOL BASED DISINFECTANT the kind that turn white in water
