zx12edge 1,001
Looking for a bit of advice on getting my pup to accept a collar. Tried putting collar on for short periods dog goes mental tried leaving it on all day/night pup stays on its bed and wont walk eat or go for toilet until you take it off.Never had a dog that's this resentful of wearing a collar.this has been going on now for nearly three weeks. This pup is quiet intelligent comes to it's name scratches at the door to go for piss happy dog except for the fear/hate to wearing it's collar. Any of you guys had this problem and how did you get by it?
skycat 6,173
How old is the pup? Did you have it straight from the breeder or had it already had another home? What sort of collar is it? Too tight or heavy a collar can really affect some Collie blooded pups badly. Why not try just tying a thin strip of material round its neck: a strip from an old t shirt or something: make sure it is secure and can't come off, but is loose enough not to feel tight round the pup's neck. That way it gets used to wearing something very light and not restrictive around its neck. Age is another thing: if the pup has got to 12-14 weeks, it has entered the first 'fear' period in its life, when anything new can be a problem. A bit more detail about the pup would help me to offer better advice.

The pup is just over 12 weeks old had him at 9 weeks old.I have tried two collars first one was one of those light weight nylon ones second one was a thin leather one reacted the same to both.He is a beardie/picardy/grey.except for the aversion to the collar he is a nosy outgoing type. Any of you guys had this problem and how did you get by it? all those pointers skycat said plus , with dogs its all about associations, thats how it figures the world out both positive and negative associations , A lead which can have huge negative associations for dogs and pups before they make the positive link between the lead and getting out and having a great time, So when you put the collar on the pup make sure it has a shit hot time doing what it loves best, that way a positive association is made with the collar, it should go like this, collar on, favorite play or activity plus treat, collar off, play stops , once the pup makes the link life will get easier for ya,,best of luck Edited December 2, 2011 by Casso
