any advice on seeking rabbiting permission

Recommended Posts

evening, im new to the hunting scene, having owned my lurcher for a year now, shes coming on very well, i have been working on a country house what has a few fields and i have been taking my dog out lamping there, shes had about 15/20 rabbits now on the lamp only been out 5 times so she seems to be doing ok, brings straight back to me unmarked,

but like i said there is only 2 fields so i would like to try seek other permission, any advice how to approach farmers, landowners etc to try get permission, should i take the dog with me if i go knocking to show them shes calm and not aggresive, etc.. as i say im a novice so any advice would be welcome

thanks?!

also i live right on the coast and theres a few rabbits on the sand dunes on beach, first time i have seen fawn coloured wild rabbits that blend very well into the sand..

thanks..

Have you got ferrets? as I found it can be easier to get permission offering ferreting first then once your on and trusted farmers are happier to let you on at night.

Be polite, try to look half decent ( don't need a suit, but cap worn backwards and your ass hanging out of your jeans wont help lol) and leave on a good note even if it's a no " thanks for your time , heres my number if ever you need help with controling your rabbits in the future" or something like that.

Persevere mate and once you'v got a little bit you'll find if you treat the land and the farmers with respect you'll be offered more,

Good luck

hopefully ill find somewhere this weekend, i have woods about a mile away from my house whats full of deer, and the fields on top have quite a lot of hares in them, my friend farms the fileds and says on a night its crazy with people hare coursing, apparently driving through fields and hedges in 4x4s ruining them, so id rather get permission than get caught by the police up the woods! Hence the reason why it's getting harder and harder for lads to get permission, it may not all be true but it's a shame that some people do ruin it for others,

Can't your mate who farms the land sort you some permission.........

I find alot of the farmers are giving it to the shooters!! But also there not doing a good job in one night on 1 field 2 fox a black and white and countless rabbits and none were lamp shy. But I also find it hard being young but I'm gobba take a differnt approach if they say no I'm going to leave a business card make it look like I'm making the effort

Farmers stick to there own circles normally and are more likely to let you on if they think or know your country folk rather then being a city folk. I go in me wellies lol walk or drive up to the farm house and ask to speak to the main man or women around the place and have a chat with them about a mixed number of things, start by mentioning that I'm looking for more work and contacts being an agricultural contractor and so on just to get them interested that I could be handy to know lol Nearly 99% of farmers then ask you the norm questions about yourself, like where you live what work you've done and so on and what other farmer you know and build a repore with them. Then I mention the dogs as by then he will know alot about me and by then should have gathered I'm genuine and no how to behave on a farm and around live stock and on the same wave lenghth to them. and it works a treat. it reasures them that I'm a trusted character to have around. I've gained more land then I could possible walk in a season and gave lots of land to trusted mates that I can't get around. I've never had a problem with it. I've also gained alot of work via permission And in return if they ever get stuck or have an emergency on any farm i'l happily lend a hand. Hope any of that might help
