well the pups are comming along just fine [fingers crossed] apart from bailey is still whining now and then .they both sit and stay on the whistle both bring the ball back .so i decided to take koda out by himself and give him a retrieve with a rabbit skin on a dummy and BINGO! he loved it and after the initial few bits of fur falling out he retrieved to hand twice and was praised up and then i let him play about so im happy with that

i usually keep the rabbit skin off them until they are about 10 months old and retrieving every other different type of dummy. ive found sometimes that the pups forsake every type of dummy once they have had fur. Im no expert but be careful

ok will take that on board bailey has been whining ALOT and it was really getting on my nerves he is as fit as a fiddle so nothing medical going on ive tried a clicker and raised my voice to him to try stopping it then i thought about a water pistol and its definetly started to work! hes a great little dog and his training is as good as koda,s but i dont think i would have kept him if his whining hadnt toned down as it goes riight thru you .But touch wood another week or so should sort himout as he doesnt like being squirted .Any one had this problem ?

Nice work..... I've got my spaniels retreaving a ball to hand my Springer is 14 weeks and my Cocker is 15 weeks they return a ball 9 out of 10 times I'm just struggling to get them to wait and go on my command. ( so if you have any good advice please do tell ).

Oh yea I do use a whistle and they have two commands 1. Come 2. To sit but they will run back and sit ( not to sure if that's a good thing but it works ).

Again nice work.

on the retrieving side of things i was trying to train both pups at same time WRONG! so decided to take them seperately and after a week or so koda sits and waits for the command "find it" bailey however cant control himself and is off like a bullet so another week or so should sort him out i only give them two retrieves per day it keeps them chomping at the bit , what i will say to you is that once owning a cocker myself they can get bored with the retrieving side of things so i would advise you to not over do it mate good luck

Running in is really annoying and potentially dangerous. It's especially annoying when somebody else's dog runs in on your dog's retrieve.

Keep them on a lead while you throw the dummy. If they lunge forward they'll get a nasty shock when the reach the end of the rope! Once they're sitting again slowly remove the lead while repeating the command "stay", if they move grab 'em. Hold them there with your voice and hand signal until you feel comfortable letting the dog have the retrieve. Having a mate throw the dummy is also good as he can grab the dummy if the dog runs in thus denying the dog his prize.

Hi mate,

Just a bit of advice for you, if you intend to work bith dogs together and you give the command 'find it' both dogs will assume you mean them and both will go for the retrieve, try just using their names, your dogs will then know which one of them is getting the command and will stop any confusion for the dogs.

I have also never used a lead when throwing dummies, i find pups learn much quicker by putting them back on the same spot they left with one loud 'stop' whistle in their face.
