Is this way of working the hare, only confined to Saluki crosses? Or do other good hare dog crosses have this quality too? Pre ban.

Cheers,

Frank.

Good question,my uncle had a collie cross just after the 2nd war that "fenced "hares, cutting them off from cover, but all the recent dogs that come to mind had a preponderance of Saluki blood in them,my own Dog out of Lucky is a good "goalkeeper",like his father, a dog that was known for this ,and threw it in some of his pups was January Jack,Joe the father of Lucky was another.

I have saluki lurchers , mine dont box hares , more up and at them pushing them around , Iv seen a good few dogs out of courfeilds Joe and they all seem to have that style of running , do you think it is down to the Saluki blood in the make up of the lurcher that makes them do this , mine only do it when the hare is trying to get into cover , and then its not often , i have watched a dog out of Joe and foxy run this year and he boxes them in the middle of the field , do you no the saluki blood in Joes make up ,,cheers

I beleive it is the Saluki blood that influences this style of running,Gary ,the owner of Joe told me the dog was out of an imported Saluki from Iran,,with Ballyregan Bob,that great staying Greyhound on the other side,a coursing friend of mine,[before the ban],has a grandaughter of Joe and she fences very well, she is also mustard onlamped rabbits running cunning and keeping them from cover,my own dog is sometimes a bit too laid back when running,I sometimes feel if he closed the gap a little more he would dominate his quarry better, you mentioned Foxy,I have only seen this dog on video ,very impressive,CN matched Gary years ago Foxy against Joe,I beleive Foxy won, both exceptional dogs. One of the posters on this thread said the more hares you run,the more a dog will box his hares ,I havent found this to allways be the case ,some years ago I ran a fast 3/4 gx Sal, for several seasons he never boxed his game but luckils he turned very well for a fast dog,the style a dog runs may have some connection with the ground you regularly run on,if a dog is clever ,and runoften on "big land"it seems to realise it has time to take its game ,and just does enough to stay in distance ,lining up its prey ,waiting fot the optimum time to strike ,I find these dogs fascinating to watch, and love to see them.Lucky caught several hares on golf courses, the dog was clever enough to adapt to the ground and pressure its quarry.

just read that frank and he just kept repeating his self over and over just in different ways ...at the end of the day hes saying saluki x grey are the best for the job ...we knew that ..........he also said in around about way that best to best breeding doesnt always give you the best pup but it gives you a better chance of doing so .....the man talked in riddels ....and said what everbody already knows he just f****d about saying it ....imo.....i see it like this some dogs will go staight in and try and finnish the hare quick some will sit behind it waiting for the right moment and then strike ....it dosent really matter how they do it as long as they get the fecker ......its good to watch a clever dog sit behind a hare and box it away from cover ..it is also good to watch a dog that is up and at em and ends the course in quick fashion ....but the best kind of dog is the one that can do both...... ;)

only saluki type will box a hare,a collie x,will try and round its quarry and look like boxing, but the only dogs that box a hare is the saluki x,a bull x boxing a hare?ha dont make me laugh,it doesnt happen,it may look like its boxing it because its running outside the hare for three or four turns, but does it box it then after 2 mins?i doubt it
