SON OFF SHAM 34
As above, I was going to use straw this winter for bedding. I usually use paper shredding that I get from the Irish army. Thing is the pups especially are pulling it all around the pen already and Im thinking straw would be a better job all round. I think I was told there's a certain type to get ! Is there ????? Any info would be great, and as we're the best places to get it from. Cheers
Mickey Finn 3,014
Son of Sham, I use straw, or marsh grass. They still drag it out of their boxes. I'd say marsh grass holds up better than straw. But, it's a couple dollars more over hear. Good luck this season!

Rhodey 96
Use good quality clean wheat straw and you'll be fine. Don't use barley straw.
skycat 6,173
I'd be interested to hear why you shouldn't use barley straw. I find that wheat straw is often mustier, dustier and often mouldy. I know that in the old days they used to say that the fine hairs from the awns in barley straw could be dangerous, but I've used barley straw for many years now and find it softer, cleaner and less dusty than wheat straw, and never had a problem. Yes, it might break down a wee bit faster than wheat straw, but its cheap anyway and easy to get hold of. Just my opinion.
paulus 26
i moved from straw to shreaded waxed paper a good while ago, a 13kilo bale is only £7 odd, its hygenic, warm, waterproof and parasite free. and when you change it, just stick out with the recycling

Millet 4,497
I dont know if barley straw does any harm to the mutt's but when i have been bedding cattle with it my wellies end up full of the little needles and i end up with a itchy rash around my leg's and ankle's.. This does not happen with wheat straw...i see mould and dust mentioned..Skycat..if at the time of bailing the sun is shining and the straw is bone dry mould and dust is not normaly a problem.. ..but if has been bailed slightly damp it goes rock hard/mouldy and dusty..which make's me sneeze like fook and make's my eye ball's blood shot with rubbing them.
