Guest sam
anyone can buy a greyhound pup from parents that haven't seen game for generations, rear it like a lurcher, teach the basics recall, jump, retrieve etc. and it'll be bowling over hares easily in no time. ive seen greyhounds straight off the track mauling foxes or pulling down roe (pre ban of course) with no experience or hunting background. an experienced owner or a willing and honest beginner with the cohonies to stick with their mutt and not sell it at the first setback is far more important than working parents silly talk, its all in the blood, you breed from pets you get pets.all the lads at the top of there game have one thing in common,a good line of dogs behind them. 1 Quote Link to post

Never had the need to.... allways had the best offered to me or went looking for them ! If I ever did breed from her, I'd want the pups to go to lads like yourself, or I'd just keep what I wanted and cull the rest ! Cheers. Quote Link to post

chartpolski 24,090
I think we are all, broadly, in agreement that worker to worker is the best way..... but surely there is a case for the first cross that ISN'T from "workers" ? I own one; another well known lad on here has a tremendous Collie/Grey, 1st cross; were it's parents "workers" ? How many of the 1st cross Bull/Greyhounds on here are out of "workers" ? How many of the Salukis that have produced the finest hare coursers in the world , were actualy "workers" ? OK, working ability is great, but breeding and stockmanship also comes into it. They all play a part in producing good Lurchers. Cheers. 3 Quote Link to post

birddog 1,354
if i'm getting it right it's ok to buy a pup from say a genuine 1st cross collie grey put to a genuine 1st cross deerhound grey (or whatever) as long as the parents are working even though the 4 grandparents may never have seen a green field, but it's not the done thing to get a 1st cross pup as the parents weren't workers even though the pup could have all the right attributes and instincts. 2 Quote Link to post
