For them to be worth while I think you'd have to refresh every year at least. Makes you think though, it is my worst nightmare that something hapens to my daughter and I am always banging on at my wife about smoke alarms and checking the cooker is off etc. the courses i did didnt include choking or how to deal with someone who has been electrecuted , which in my current job is imo essential , i did ask at work about the possibility of having more relevent training to fit the job , but as i work part time i wouldnt be seen as suitable for any first aid training in that job , pretty lame excuse if you ask me

mushroom 12,962
Bloody hell glad the wee one is OK. I did FA when I was an engineering student it's come in handy a couple of times fortunately never involving a little one (thank God) my ex is a peadiatric nurse so not worried about my youngest there but seriously I couldn't do her job EVER couldn't cope with it. was once doing a job fitting an awning heard all this commotion in the carpark some woman screaming rushed over and her husband was having a heart attack. The training kicked in instantly and I was trying to draag the guy out of the car when I looked round to see why the guy who was with me wasn't helping he was just frozen he didn't know what to do. barked at him to help which snapped him out of it and he helped but it goes to show a little training can mean all the difference between panicking and taking control of a situation. unfortunately the chap died on the way to the hospital. littlefish 586
At least if you have had some training and put it to use in a crisis, even if the outcome was not good, you know you have done your best.

Everyones panicking and frantically patting her on the back, trying to do a form of the heimlich etc. and a good 30 seconds at least went by without her being able to breath, she was bright red and the panic on her face was truly awful. Finally my dad, who's done first aid in the past, did something that made her cough up a f'ckin big piece of icing off the cake. Honestly, I thought for a second that we were going to lose her, it was a sight that will stay with me for a long long time. My sister said when she put her to bed that night and shut the door she just burst into tears at would might have been. My neice kept waking up during the night crying uncontrollably. I've been going over and over it in my head ever since. I'm going to book us all on a first aid course as soon as possible because I must admit, although I do kind of know the type of thing you're suppose to do, I'm not sure at all what I'm doing! It bought it home like a sledgehammer how quickly your whole life could fall apart in an instant. We're a really close family, I don't know how we'd cope if something like that happened. The purpose of me sharing this on here......if you're a parent or have young relatives, get yourself on a first aid course and learn the basics. These little people rely on us when things go pear shaped and trust me, when it does go pear shaped if you don't know what you're doing you really do feel helpless! I'd never forgive myself if something happened to my daughter or neice, and I was there but couldn't do anything about it......makes my blood run cold just thinking about it! Certainly makes you think......id be vaguely confident bringing an injured dog back from the brink of death .....but a kid with a sweet stuck in their throat id probably shit myself !.......shame on me Thanks for sharing the experience and glad their was a happy outcome Edited November 28, 2011 by gnasher16
Tallyho 181
Had it once where my lad was choking on a bonbon sweet, my heart stopped just out of pure panic as was unsure how to try help him, shouting to others to come help me but no f****r did , managed to get it out in the end, thank god but it certainly gives you a bit of a wake up call , i think all sholud be given basic first aid training , as it could save a life one day . Simoman 110
I remember as a kid watching the 86 world cup and England/Argentina match, i was chewing the lid of some smarties and inhaled, it blocked my throat and my old man went two houses down to fetch a nurse, she managed to get it out with the Heimlich but i can remember those couple of minutes of not being able to breathe, terrifying
