rob190364 2,594
It was my dads birthday on Friday so we were all there for a get together and a buffet etc. Towards the end of the night my little 2 year old neice was playing and went into the other room where the buffet was, next thing she's back in the room bright red and choking, and it wasn't just a bit of food had gone down the wrong hole, she couldn't breath! Everyones panicking and frantically patting her on the back, trying to do a form of the heimlich etc. and a good 30 seconds at least went by without her being able to breath, she was bright red and the panic on her face was truly awful. Finally my dad, who's done first aid in the past, did something that made her cough up a f'ckin big piece of icing off the cake. Honestly, I thought for a second that we were going to lose her, it was a sight that will stay with me for a long long time. My sister said when she put her to bed that night and shut the door she just burst into tears at would might have been. My neice kept waking up during the night crying uncontrollably. I've been going over and over it in my head ever since. I'm going to book us all on a first aid course as soon as possible because I must admit, although I do kind of know the type of thing you're suppose to do, I'm not sure at all what I'm doing! It bought it home like a sledgehammer how quickly your whole life could fall apart in an instant. We're a really close family, I don't know how we'd cope if something like that happened. The purpose of me sharing this on here......if you're a parent or have young relatives, get yourself on a first aid course and learn the basics. These little people rely on us when things go pear shaped and trust me, when it does go pear shaped if you don't know what you're doing you really do feel helpless! I'd never forgive myself if something happened to my daughter or neice, and I was there but couldn't do anything about it......makes my blood run cold just thinking about it! Kay 3,709
I have done lots of first aid courses over the years for various caring jobs I have had, but to be brutaly honest unless your using the skills daily , you forget , things like choking i would panic & be clueless , but things like stemming bleading I would be ok with Its not a bad thing to have but i do think you need to be doing it daily in a job or at least get to excersize the skills regularly for them to be effective , I guess it depends on the situation & your relationship with the person in need , I would ceratinly be no good in a cricis if it was one of my own kids for example

lapin2008 1,587
I have had them in the past but have not had a requirement to keep them upto date as of late. If your going to do one I would suggest one of the three day courses which are as 'hands on' as possible. I think you get loads more out of them then the 5 hours intensive theory based ones which tend to be more boring.

Bosun11 537
Rob, firstly i'm glad your niece is ok and well done your dad for his action. I agree with you, a basic first aid course is a must for anyone, parent or not, though I also agree with Kay that unless you are using the skills regular things can be forgotten BUT there is always some of the course that is remembered and thats the vital part, because that bit, when needed, could change death for life and thats what its all about! I'd also add that that it can be very different when it comes to your own, natural instincts do kick in and delivering the right FA can be difficult under distress but if more folk undertook the basics then there would be better help on hand, simple! One last thing, general first aid can come in very handy when your mutt comes a cropper too.
B.P.R 2,798
Do first aid on A regular basis. It's a different sort of first aid out in afghan but we do it all. Used it for real out there and about 14 months ago an old lady was choking in kfc and nobody knew what to do. We could see her choking through the glass and we ran in to help her.She was pretty shook up and we got a mention in the paper. Definitely glad I know first aid and tbh NHS 24 is a life saver with a young baby. When I had him on my own the odd nights I had them on speed dial. Whats this rash, he's hot etc. They rely on us so much.

For them to be worth while I think you'd have to refresh every year at least. Makes you think though, it is my worst nightmare that something hapens to my daughter and I am always banging on at my wife about smoke alarms and checking the cooker is off etc.
TOMO 26,216
d.r.a.b.c.. danger, responce,, airway,,breathing,,circulation.........done a few courses over the years mainly cos of being on the doors...........when i last did it,,,, the chest compresions has changed,,, you did 15 then a breath..............but now i think its 20 or 30 and 2 or 3 breaths,,,, does anyone know what it is now??? had a good few bits to do over the years,, thankfully nowt to serriouse to be honest i prefered to let others take over, i always remember a woman having a fit,,, and her family trying to get her up of the floor and getting in our way big time..... when someones fitting you let them get on with it,,,, but try and surround them with soft things cushions ,coats and move things like glasses or anything that might hurt them out the way
