I wrote an article in the CW years ago inviting people to come up and lamp with us, we had many many offers as you can imagine, one guy with a pure bred whippet that had to be carried off the land I can remember..only one lads dog did the business, well, she did get into the 20`s but looked the part when running, the lad wanted to go home about 2am, while we wanted to lamp on permission till 2am, then into the lions den till breaking light.but it was good to see lads from other areas, see their dogs and hear their crack...

cant see the piont in taking people out who are clueless , and buy running dogs before they get to know whats what, we always done an apprentiship living and being brought up in mining areas , there always was poachers and there type ,and you learnt of them by doing the graft ,but was mostly close freinds family best way

That's how a lot of us learned the game years ago, but if you're completely honest I'm sure you'll agree there was a lot of clueless people about back then too. If a keen young lad tagged along with these sort, then there was little hope for them really.

Whin your reply is a perfect example of what I posted.

If people don't take new guys out and teach them the ropes then there won't be any dog men left when your not able to do it.

What are people that don't have contacts meant to do? Stick to football and sniffing coke? Or try and get a dog, learn as they go and get out with more experienced dogmen and learn the trade.

Like I said. Things change, I'm not clueless, I know quite a bit. Just need help with getting out there and the best way to do it is to tag along. I'm not afraid of graft. Was out on Saturday night lamping with a guy on here, horrendous weather, carrying rabbits for miles- loved every minute of it and learned a lot of quality information and gained genuine advice. A lot more than I've ever learned on here.

I was just trying to make the point that not all of the older hunting men were as good as some might think. When I remember back to when I first got into the game there were a lot of clueless people about then too (though at the time I had no way of knowing the difference), and I regularly thank my lucky stars that I never tagged along with some of those.

The two men from whom I learned the basics are both sadly long dead, and I feel very lucky to have been taken under their wing.

trouble is nowadays a lot of yougsters got no scruples when i started if someone showed me or took me to a good place never went back unless invited ,whether permission or as it usually was poaching .nowadays its more dog eat dog and they are back there with their mates behind your back and bringing it on top for you if you go there next time .ive got quite a few youngsters started in the dog game over the years ,but lately been burnt by a few so it makes you think twice before taking them .

ya i dont think i would be bringing anyone out that wasnt clued up,but there are young lads who wont go behind your back and will appreciate the advise, but i agree you can be burnt fairly quickly thats life .you live and learn ,guess you need to be a good judge of character, even at that it can still come back and bite you in the arse.
