Guest elstudro1986
Just got a couple of questions for you lads and lasses ive been hunting for a while with my ferrets and my mate and his lurcher really enjoyed it but now ive got my own place i ve decided(begged the misses ) to get a lurcher of my own. was just wondering what would be the best cross and what sex for me to get as it would be my first would really be used for rabbits and the odd hare or fox the land ive got is mainly used by sheep and its mostly flat with the odd cliffy hill so its not really rough terrain. ive got a little minature jack russel dog at the moment more her lap dog than anything else want to get really stuck in to the game the jacky is 1 yr old had him since pup is it to late to get him started? how can i get the jacky interested if its not too late. thanks in advance for any help Quote Link to post
Guest elstudro1986
thanks terrier man i was basically wanting the dog for rabbits just the odd time you may see a fox on the land and an occasional hare was nt really after a permanent all rounder, just something that is good on rabbits i have been advised off a few of the lads to go for a DOG collie+whippet+greyhound as they are faithfull and easy to train whats your opinion on this cheers Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Good cross, especialy if its lurcher to lurcher over several good well known generations. A good strong whippet is good too off known lines, link below will take you to some very good working whippets. http://www.webstoreuk.com/whippets.html Good luck with your search and take your time, as the pup will be with you for ever. Eggy 0
Ive been offered a nice little pup 7 week old brindle dog mother is bull/saluki dad is beard collie bullgrey hound and apparently there grandparents were handcock bred but the owner only wants £ any suggestions The same as Frank...working parents are a 1st, but if it was my personal choice there shouldn't be too much % bull in the cross if you going for mainly bunnies & hares (don't know what the % bull is in the mix you mentioned).... Cheers Eggy Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Then a DVd of the parents working, would be second choice. Or even pics ect. Frank. Quote Link to post
Eggy 0
If you can see the parents work, all the better. Frank. Thats very hard since most litters are in summer, and its out of season True paddy but....."Patience is a virtue"....it is IMHO better to check out potential workers well before you are even thinking of getting your pup, or wait a year, get to know true dogmen, see their dogs work, get into the game, then get a pup when the time is right. The likes of Hancock thrive on the demand for a 'fast' dog. (NOT slagging of anyone with a Hancock dog, just slagging of commercial puppy-peddling) Cheers Eggy Quote Link to post
