Pig dogs

Recommended Posts

You can pretty much use any powerful dog as a catch dog but it's wether it can do it over and over without getting smashed to bits!! If you can get a good pit which I there are in New Zealand or as allready said a staffy or English then go with that.

Or a 3/8 5/8 or 1/2 cross bull grey should do you fine!!

What are the boars like in NZ ? Do they get very big ?

If your using it through bush mate I wouldent use a whippet and also if you need it to stay for a couple of hours whippet hasn't really got stamina to do this love to see a bull deerhound Gray on them

Why don't you just import from oz there's some really tough dogs out there which have been bred from generations of working stock on the quarry you will hunt, alot better option then what the uk has to offer on your quarry

Edited to say It wouldn't take overly long to ship it either

As said any powerful dog can pretty much do the job as has been proved in the US, EU and AUS so no matter the location the job is pretty much the same. In thick/dense wood you'd want a shorter stockier type catch dog teamed up with some hounds like the old school Dorsey/Stout catch dog AB's that Bill Hines had. Then in AUS and Argentina where the land is open and the pigs can run a big distance then a running type catch dog is needed like a dogo or the tall athletic Aussy dogs. Depends on the terrain I guess as to what dogs you'd need.

They don't need to be huge dogs, and if you are hunting in blackberry, native bush or pine blocks; then something the size of a deer/grey could be a disadvantage. The type of land in NZ differs considerably from the land in Aus, and different types of dog are needed for different land worked. I've seen and heard of all sizes and types of dogs worked on pig in NZ and some very strange, (to us in the UK), crosses !

The dogs in this pic were Blue Merle Collie, Staffy, and two Ridgeback X Labs;

This was a pure Huntaway;

They all worked pig. I suppose it depends on the type of land you hunt; and just about any dog with enough minerals will do the job.

Cheers.

Sorry lads, i know all about pig huntin and the breeds used in ozzy and stuff like that. What im after is a small very quick dog with a hell of a bite on it. the terrain i hunt is very tight cover and mean sumtime [bANNED TEXT] leaving the track, cwraling under the crap. Here in NZ we like to use a dog that bails (barks, containing the pig) so size dont matter. But before the dog can bail it has to stop the pig by whacking it on the ass or nuts so something like a whippet x bull. The biggest pig i have caught was 218lbs.

What im asking, these bull x whips are more popular in your sport. How do they hunt? do they have a good nose, good prey drive? Which way u breed them? Are there any lads that breed them with good success on the game they hunt? Or are they complete shite!

Mate the kind of hunting that we do in Britain is not the same mate with lurchers it's more they will run on something that's moving fox hunting with hounds is more like pig hunting in a sense I know from my time in Nz and going pigging I think ud be better sticking with the kind of dogs u use alrdy I know when I was in Nz it's very wild bush land if I was breeding trying too get smaller size I would be thinking of at most 1/4 whippet 3/4 of pit bull type that u alrdy use to get that smaller type with it's speed but not lose so much of it's nose and that never give up streak that the bull gives
