Pig dogs

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

At home here in New Zealand we dont have much coursing type hunting hares and rabbits but we love hounding the local pig population. We mainly use X bred dogs of all breeds and sizes, but i have been thinking of starting my own line of dogs recently and wanted to start with a good base. My thinking of along the lines of bull X whippet. The reason being the pigs here get a fair bit of hunting pressure and can run miles in tight bush and gorse, and wanting a fast, small, hard stopping type dog.

My Questions 1. What bull do you commonly use? i prefur English bull terrier.

2. When you X these breeds which way do u mate, bull over whip, or whip over bull, for a lean build?

3. Does anyone have any wellbred 50/50 pups planned, that can prove their line from good hunting stock?

4. Do they trail bark (bark or whine while chasing game)?

i have also had a bit of a search through past posts, they seem to be love em or hate em.

Any info, tips or past experiences would be appreciated. Is there a market place for hunting dogs and pups?

Cheers Steve.

If your using it through bush mate I wouldent use a whippet and also if you need it to stay for a couple of hours whippet hasn't really got stamina to do this love to see a bull deerhound Gray on them

i would go bull whippet gh how hast are the pigs

Hast?? u mean fast i guess, in the open the dog will out run the pig, but in the crap if the pig gets a head start, can outrun the dogs and stay ahead long enough to escape, sometimes hours. Apparently a pig can reach top speed in three strides of approx 35kph
