ANY TIPS ON FERRETING

Recommended Posts

welcome to the THL mate, alot of helpfull people on here.

how old is your ferret, maybe its a combination of empty holes and a ferret new to working?Keep at it,theres been times when ive thought theres no rabbits home and about to move on then bang!If your ferret is newish to ferreting give it time to pick it up,if it comes out put it back in.It will soon get used to it,if you hear any thumping then you know somethings going on,sometimes one ferret can get the run around

I think a ferret on there arse will make them bolt mate.....

Are the holes showing recent signs of use, habitation??? are they in open ground or cover? If they are in open ground, could be they are used as quick cover rather than living in .. If they are in

The best advise i can give you is be QUIET net the bury and wait 10-15 mins befor putting ferrets in also try to get there first light and watch what holes they run down

thanks matty. gonna ask on here tomorrow see if anyone is about this area. and ferret is inexperianced and there open hole so prob are just used as quick cover.

will go tomorrow and have a crack and let you all know how i get on.

thanks everyone for you help

Great piece of advice about getting out at first light and walking the ground you intend to ferret, gives you an idea where the bunnys are living

Good advice. :good:

One thing I can say is that in my experience, the most likely looking buries are often the ones in which you don't find the rabbits. A dog which can show you there's something at home is nearly as useful as the ferret itself. Without the dog you could forever be netting up buries for no reward, as I suspect many of us did when we were first starting out. I know I used to anyway.

A dog is not a must when you're ferreting, but IMO they make your life a hell of a lot easier. Most dogs will mark if they're shown enough rabbit holes, not just the usual breeds like terriers & lurchers.

best thing to do mate is try get a rabbit with the skin on and feed it to the ferret, that should give the ferret a taste for them :)

i started off on my own without any help and just the info off here as a guide.

just start with small warrens and net up quitely, leave the area for a few minutes and when you return wack the ferret down. (always best to try it with an experienced one first) if not it should pick it up after it works out that thats where the food lives :)

when the ferret is down, try and stay quiet and stand above where you may think the tunnels go (should help you feel the thumping)

just keep trying the ferret down and after a few goes move on to another and do the same.

best way too find out if there are rabbits home is have a sniff of the holes lol, you can smell the buggers haha

hope you have a decent bit of luck and get yourself sorted :)

all the best
