digital slr camera recomendations

Recommended Posts

i know nothing about cameras or photography but ive always fancied giving it a go, ive just typed in digital slr on ebay and got over 52000 results :icon_eek: so some advice would be appreciated, it has to be simple to use and robust as i have a habit of breaking things as my growing collection of broken gun stocks is a testerment to  price range up to £500.

dont get any camera that isnt an slr. and i would go for a canon or nikon. you will get one with your budget. its maybe worth going for a used camera and a couple of lenses. this will increase your options  the lower priced canons and nikon slr. will produce great results. and more importantly have the idiot setting. :D

I'd go for a nikon, I wasn't blown away with my canon. It's all about the lense !

what about a nikon d3000 on offer at argos at the minute with 18-55mm vr lense ? £329 :hmm:

Its a great wee camera but if your looking to do wildlife your gonna need something in the range of 300mm

You can get a Nikon 3100 for £350

The Nikon 70-300mm lens is a decent piece of glass but it's around £340 there are cheaper makes, but if you can buy the best you can afford

I would agree with bigbarnett and go for something secondhand in a Nikon D50 (which I use as well) or a Nikon D70 with a few lenses which should easily be picked up under £500. I've bought all of my cameras secondhand and have never had a problem, the majority of photographers treat their camera equipment like babies and they're as good as new. I would go for an 18-55 lens for everyday stuff and a 70-300 lens for wildlife which can also be a great portrait lens if you want to blur out the background, sigma do a 70-300 Nikon fit with macro which is great for close -ups of bugs and plants.

As regards the D3000 this is a newer version of the D40 which like the D60 and D5000 need a lens with a built in focusing motor so not all Nikon lens will work in auto focus on these cameras. You'll get more for your money in the secondhand market and have a greater choice of lenses to choose from in the future.
