what age should i start to work my lurcher eg take ferreting

Recommended Posts

i asked the same question the other day, and the response i got was nmixed some say 6-7 months other say soon as its allowed out, i think the main thing is train it, make sure it has all its basic commands and definatley a good strong recall, then id worry about taking it out. mine is now 16 weeks has a brilliant recall and very well behaved so he will be coming laming with me from now on only to watch though will not run him for a long while yet. il start to run him from about 9/10 months but slowley on easy rabbits

IMO a pup doesn,t need to go out hunting trips untill its at least 6 mths old and then only ferreting, taking a pup out before this is a waste of time as its not got the mentallity to learn much when its just a young puppy, much better just walking the pup, socializing, letting it absorb the sights and sounds of everyday life, let it BE A PUP and of course basic training regularly, I,m sure folk will disagree but this is how i,ve always done it and my dogs have became competent at the game of ferreting, lamping I leave untill about 9 months when the dogs physicaly and mentally mature enough for the odd run, atb

i think the thing is every one has tried it in the way they have and when your getting so many differnt replies its down to you to make the decision, trial and error i suppose is the right thing to say with it being my first pup anyway

thing is there is no wrong way, its just opinons so thats down to you buddy, personly i go by the saying you cant teach an old dog new tricks for me im gonna try early

There is some truth in the saying you can,t teach an old dog new tricks but 6/7 months ain,t an old dog, I suppose taking a very young pup the odd wee ferreting trip isn,t going to do the pup any harm but personaly I can,t see the point, more of a hindrance I think :hmm:

I wouldnt be leaving it sat in a kennel on a days ferreting..! Taking it with you is helping it socialize with people, dogs, surroundings, smells, and the ferrets! Watching and learning is key, a great step for a young pup.. At such a young age he can't do anything and most likely will be a hindrance even annoying unless your out with others, as he will be your main focus and won't appreciate being tied up on the side lines!

ok so people have diffrent ways of doin it but what way should i do

Plenty of things you could do....making sure the dog is steady around your ferrets, you should really be working on the basics rather than worrying about when to take the dog out. You have plenty of time....get it right early and you should end up with a decent hunting companion. I usually start mine on ferreting trips around 7-8months and get them on the lamp around 12months but everybody's different.

Well my dogs go where i go.. I'm out bushing tomorrow and my 16week old terrier will be coming with me, for him it's just a walk/exercise but he'll be watching and learning and in another 2,3,4 months when he's ready he'll join in.. I'm in no rush to push my dogs and ruin em, the grew was never run till 11month only ever watched.. Wait till you think the dog has the SPEED AND MATURITY then put him on the lamp for easy catches, run him too soon and the dog might yap when chasing, this is through frustration and think fk it their all too fast and learn to just chase! Wait till he's got the speed and can satisfy both you and himself..

so you think i should take him out when ferreting but peg him down so he can just wacth or just let him run the holes i will be useing nets so he wont have to cacth them
