skycat 6,174
The bones that splinter are the leg bones. Rib bones from immature sheep (lambs) will seldom splinter, and even if the dog does swallow bits of bone without chewing too much, its stomach juices will dissolve the bone no problem as bones from younger animals are softer than those of old animals. I've been feeding lamb rib bones for many years and never had any problems at all, but I don't feed leg bones except to young pups with milk teeth, pups who can only gnaw the meat of the bone without risking breaking up the bone. Beef bones, or bones from any large adult animal are the most dangerous as they are very hard and will splinter. Even the marrow bones beloved of dog owners since forever, are dangerous as they are so hard that a really persistent bone chewer can break its teeth on them. Quote Link to post
