lurcher pup with runs

Recommended Posts

hi everyone, both my lurcher & greyhound seem to have a sensitive stomach. and have the runs on and off, i dont feed my dog processed dog food. they have brown rice, oats, raw eggs, natural yogurt, raw chicken wings, goats milk etc. can anybody recommend a good quality dry food for both my 5 month old pup and greyhound, my terrier seems to be able to eat anything and not make any difference to her. thanks

pup has rolled oats with goats milk for breakfast so does greyhound and terrier. around a cup full of oats. then lunch time pup has rice and eggs, then on an evening they have rice, oats, natural yogurt. pup has 2 chicken wings and greyhound has 3 and terrier 1. i wouldnt say there large meals, its really hard to guage how much they should have on this diet or any diet apart from dog food. n its hard work. they have brewers yeast and cod liver oil once a day aswell

im doing away with the diet and just gunna use a good quality dry dog and chicken wings and mince. yes i did read a book called give your dog a bone and it is a very good book on how and what to feed ur dog. the foods i use are good for them but dosnt agree with there stomachs. the reason i changed from processed food is they wouldnt eat it even if i mixed it with wet food etc. my dogs have got to be the most picky dogs when it comes to food

tbh mate i think you need to just feed raw and the odd bit of fruit/veg , as long as they get raw meat and bones they be fine

so the pup only has 2 chicken wings a day? thats not enough meat. forget the rolled oats , goats milk, yoghurt, rice, eggs( not every day) and get some BARF into the pup and give the rest every now and then, atb sesku

Yes, you are feeding far too much oats. And forget the milk as well: dogs don't need milk of any sort once they are weaned. Raw eggs too: not good as raw eggs stop certain nutrients being absorbed by the dog. Forget the brewer's yeast, and cod liver oil you only need a couple of times a week. Main bulk of the food should be meat, chicken carcases.

For example: my pup of 6 months gets a chicken carcase in the morning or a couple of lamb ribs. Evening meal he gets around 400grams of red meat or rabbit, or some type of game, with another chicken carcase or a few wings, or a lump of breast of lamb. He gets around a tablespoon full of oats, or rice with this, no more.

It shouldn't be hard to gauge how much a dog needs: if it gets thinner, feed it more. If it gets fat or gets the shits, feed it less. Dogs often get the shits when you're pumping too much of any food through their system. Dogs are designed to want to eat as much as you put in front of them: it is up to us not to feed them too much if they don't need it. They may look at you as thought they are always hungry, and will eat far more than is good for them unless they are a bit odd or picky which is usually a nervous problem rather than a physical one.

I know that my dogs would eat triple the amount I give them if they had the chance, but they'd be overweight. Cut the food right back and don't forget that the milk, of whatever sort, may well be responsible for giving them loose bowels.
