Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Called in to a place this morning where theres a small shoot trying to get up and running and one of the things they are up against is the deer pulling at the maize cover crops .Theres no-where near enough of this for my liking but thats another story but what they have got is getting eaten ,flattened and lead on .Beautiful morning with decent sun rise ,seen better but what can you expect in winter . Stalked down the left hand side of the land to get the wind right but i knew it would change as i got lower by the river .Never got that far though as a scan revealed a doe lead in tight to the hedge and looking away from me so nearly missed her in the bins .We rely a lot on what we are used to looking for but the cream inner ears wernt there to give it away .I was opposite the doe and she was about 150 yds away maybe a bit less .A crawl was in order to get up to her so as not to get her on her feet and away .The grass was sodden as was i within seconds but these things are secondary to a good stalk .Made it to within about 70 yds and took a good long look through the bins mainly to allow the heart to slow for better shooting .The head was steady in the scope and a shot to the brain put her down .Reloaded as a matter of course and caught another two deer running downhill the other side the hedge .I followed in the scope and saw them both come through the hedge a bit further down and about 120 yds maybe .The ground here slopes down to the river fields ,fields that never get grazed only cut in the height of summer .I could plainly see turf behind the old doe and she fell on the spot to a chest shot .Her follower ,a buck kid didnt go far so he was added as a matter of course .A bit on the small side but otherwise a healthy kid .A mature buck came through then ,the one i had hunted all summer but of course he was allowed to go on ,over the boundary to provide another seasons sport . Back up the yard ,i spoke to the lad whos doing the feeding and he said hed had a couple of feeders knocked over elsewhere but i had things to do so that problem could wait for another day . The first doe headshot Second lot .Note the different light in the lower fields under the overhanging trees 2 Quote Link to post
