THE GRIFF 8
We have some permission around a cematry but not in it. To cut a long story short the cematry has lots of rabbits in it and my gran burried there, the rabbits are eating the flowers on her grave within 12 hours of them being put there. We can ferret the sets on the boarder and shoot all around the edge but not in it. I have thought about snares but I can't get there daily to check them and haven't really had much experience setting them. My latest idea is a rabbit drop trap near my grans grave, this could be checked daily by family which are all big shooters. Does anyone have any plans to make one of these, it's mainly just the drop mechanism/trap door that I would need plans for to see how to get it balanced properly and to see how to make it drop and spring back up? If anyone has any other ideas on how to get rid of these rabbits it would be greatly appreciated. Quote Link to post
moley 115
you need to dig a pit for a drop trap, that wouldn,t go down very well in a cemetry, why not put a bit of rabbit netting round your gran,s grave and carry on doing what your doing 1 Quote Link to post
nod 285
Are you allowed to dig near the graves? a drop box really only works along side a fence, talk to the local parish they might even let you shoot there with airgun or get some one else in to do it Quote Link to post

longnetter 32
craigyboy is dead right..contact the local Parish or Borough Council who might run the cemetry or the vicar of the church if it's a churchyard cemetry...don't be tempted to do anything silly...someone will report you and they'll hang you out to dry Edited November 25, 2011 by longnetter Quote Link to post
THE GRIFF 8
I was talking to the lad that does the mole trapping there and they won't let him do the rabbits either, it seems somebody in the office likes rabbits. He also has ferrets and would do the ferreting unpaid but they still won't go for it. There is no fencing allowed around the graves because they can't cut the grass. I have a vase that stands 2 and a half foot high and the rabbits still get the flowers. We had 4 with the ferrets last weekend, missed two I was gutted. I shot 3 on Thursday night and am going to have look up with the night vision again one night this this week so am doing everything i can think of possible. I thought if I was to put a couple of drop boxes along the hedge where they are running that may get a couple. Why does mixi always get your good permissions and never hit when it's needed???( there's a thought) Edited November 26, 2011 by THE GRIFF Quote Link to post
smithie 2,443
cant you get a longnet out? Quote Link to post
THE GRIFF 8
cant you get a longnet out? Possibly, but it's knowing where to put it, its such a large area and it would have to go within the cemetery grounds and then where back to the chance of getting caught again. I suppose if I keep getting a few a week with the ferrets and rimmy then it should knock the numbers down over the winter. It's just such hard work with the ferrets, there is that much cover you can't net the holes and even bolting to the shotgun is hard because you are shooting blind into bushes and cover. It's frustrating when you spend all day doing really difficult sets and only end up with 4 in the bag. Quote Link to post
DKGPestControl 22
Depending on the site, size, placement etc then a local pest control company would definatley trap/snare/shoot the rabbits. I have only ever controled the rabbits near one before. There were no warrens on the site, but the rabbits came from the common ground opposite the site. I went there early one morning per week put a long net along the side of the grave yard and run the dogs through. Picked up 5/6 rabbits a time. This may work for you! Quote Link to post

andy67 7
a similair thing happened near me but this time it was moles . the council wouldnt do anything about it until a few angry relatives went to the paper . photos of dead relatives graves covered in mole hills and even headstones starting to fall over soon gave council a kick in the arse they needed . hullhunter 219
why dont you spend a day or two finding all the sets, then get all the holes clear with a petty strimmer, axe, machete or anything else that will do the job then leave it a couple of days the go back and ferret. if you have enough nets net up all the warrens then go back to the car leave for a hour then go back as silently as you can and ferret all the warrens. the advantage of netting all the holes is that if one slipps the net it will be back netted in the next warren. when you have finished fill in all the holes then leave a week then go back and see witch sets are still been used. hope you get it sorted mate Edited November 26, 2011 by hullhunter 1 Quote Link to post

There is some sets at the other side that can be cut back and we plan to do it when the frosts have kicked in and the falling leaves have gone. I have already thought of contacting the council and kicking up a fuss but if they won't even let the on site pest controller use ferrets then I think I would have to make a right song and dance to get anything done. I also feel if I make a song and dance about it and still get told no, I stand more chance of drawing attension to myself when I am down there doing my bit. On a positive note, I have just got back with another 3 in the bag, that's 10 in 8 days. It's really windy tonight and the wind was blowing the wrong way so hopefully if it changes direction I might get another half dozen or so one night this week.
