Laying Nets

Best to way lay purse nets? . . .

I have been told lots of different ways;

1) Net stretched tight like a web with the middle of the net over the hole.

2) The complete opposite, drape the net over the hole and tuck the bottom ring down the hole so the rabbit stands on the net as it bolts.

3) A mix of the two, lay the net tight but push the bottom ring into the ground to add that bit of resistance so the net purses more from the top.

I can understand the reasoning and theory behind all three ways but as we all know theory doesnt always convert into reality! So rather then theory lets go on experience. What have people found the best for them?

depends on the hole how i set the net,as said i drop the ring in then spread the net,not drum tight though, but you aint gonna do that on a bolt hole straight up out the ground on a flat field are you, just lay the net over, some can be trickey around tree stumps, under hedges to get the net laying correct but where theres a will theres a way...................usualy ;)

Mixture of both. As been said, every hole is different. Ive been getting them in reverse the past few weeks, where I didnt have enough nets. They would bolt from the un netted holes and run into netted holes. I dont think it matters what way, as long as they dont snag, and can purse properly.

i dont think there is a best way to lay purse nets as long as the net purses properly when a rabbit bolts thats all that matters everyone sets them differently and uses the way they've been taught to lay them i personally use the method where you stretch the net out over the hole like you mentioned in method 1. atb

Thanks for all the replies. :D This is my second season ferreting now and everyday I go out I come back having learnt something new. I hope this will keep happening for a few years to come. I guess its like they say, you learn something new everyday.

in general terms method 2. but situations are different. bolted rabbits from all sorts of places. where in some cases it is difficult to net. thats when you use your own intuition to deal with them.a few extra items in your bag can help with the setting of nets in akward places. you never stop learning in this sport. people will come up with their own ideas to deal with akward situations.

I tend to cover the hole with the net with as much bag in the net as possible, the rabbits head goes through the net and then is purses, my mate tends to lay the ring in the hole first so the rabbit is sort of stood on the net as its head hits it and then purses.

As already said, every hole is different and sometimes you have to just make the best job of it you can.

Most people have there own ways of doing it that works for them.

As has been said, different holes, call for slightly different tactics, and each individual will have their own slightly different way of doing things.

However, i have laid a decent number of nets in my life so far and this is how i do it in general -

Clear the area around the hole as best you can, and clear out any dead leaves etc from the hole. Push the bottom ring into the hole, dig the ring into the earth on the floor of the hole, and spread the net out over the floor, cover the rest of the hole with the net, pushing the loose bit into the hole. Then push the peg in so that the draw string is tight.

as I,ve said I prefer ring in the hole (that doesn,t sound right :cray: ) but sometimes its not possible

sometimes a wee twig comes in handy to hold the ring

Even set nets on nettle stalks and used drawing pins to hold them when ferreting under a stable block and twigs when ferreting a stone pile , theres no set way only good way is when the rabbits in the bag
