Ideation 8,216
One of the big estates I asked on was on full lock down due to some lampers stealing a couple of motorbikes and quads recently..The keepers were almost friendly but deffinately not for having me on their patch or anyone else..Said the word was out and they were clamping down on all the lads who already had permission. I can tell you this ..after all the funny looks and the refusals yesterday,i dont think i can face asking again..I felt like a 10 year old in the headmasters study waiting to be punished.. When you ask politely and try your hardest to be nice and it gets thrown back in your face, well after a while you just think f..k off.. I would rather explain what im doing to the coppers when they catch me than ask again. I 100% get what you are saying, but it's a big circle. You think ' f**k em, i'm just going to poach', and then next man, who goes to get permission, gets told to f**k off, because of what you are doing. 1 Quote Link to post
whin 463
ye i no a few honest poachers who only take whats wild and neve rever abuse the situation , thtas what we all done years ago ,as permisuonwasnt there unles you were in with the laird etc Quote Link to post
mackem 26,224
I won't be asking anymore as a refusal definately offends. Take it as a dating analogy,if you had adopted that stance when you were a kid and first developed an interest in women you would have never gotten out of the starting blocks, keep asking, the smallest door-opening will allow you to get your foot in and lever it open a little more,it doesnt have to be 5000 acre farms, beggars cant be choosers in the early stages of a game, failing that get ANY permission whatsoever north, south, east, and west as your alibi,at least then whatever fence you jump if your get pulled coming from that general direction you have a permission slip Quote Link to post
danw 1,748
there isnt' many times a keeper will turn down the offer of a few days beating/or helping out gain his trust and you would be surprised what doors that will open. 1 Quote Link to post
*ferrifleboy 19
We've been told by poachers to get off land that we have permission for, one that my mate who was with me actually owns!! For some folk permission means nothing!!!!! Jokers! Edited November 22, 2011 by *ferrifleboy Quote Link to post
*ferrifleboy 19
For most farmers I think they prefer the harmless ferrets and nets we got alot of permission that way as soon as you mention the dogs it's no no no.. Best to call places where you can see the damage being caused, such as farms with crop fields next to (securely fenced) railways etc we still get dirty looks and moaned at by dog walkers on our way back from a day ferreting some permission.. Ya just can't win haha Quote Link to post
dytkos 17,784
I find its handy to have business cards with all your contact details on. Not neccessarily saying Free Pest Control etc but something tangible. When you turn up, start by saying, "I'm sorry ro bother you, I know your a busy man" or something along those lines. Offer them your card, very few will refuse to take it, its a "conditioned" thing! Then say "My name is **** ****** and I do some pest control for ***** ***** down the road/next valley/in the area etc etc (feel free to lie through your teeth at this point, especially if you are away from your own locale!) and I was wondering if you have anybody in or if I could help you with your rabbit control. If you are reasonably smart/suitably dressed, polite and not with in old tranny with lurchers hanging out of every window LOL, you will probably get a civil response. It may more than likely be no, but if so, ask him if he changes his mind to get in touch with you. If it looks a particularly good spot, go back again in a month or 2 and ask again. If I'm out somewhere and spot several rabs, I'll making a point of finding the farmer and saying " you've got several rabbits on, do you want to keep them all" in a light hearted fashion, again, you may get fecked off but these methods have worked for me many times. Only problem i, I've now got to fork out for about 20 bottles of whisky every Christmas Good luck chaps hope this helps. Cheers, D. PS Stay away from Cornwall Quote Link to post
Guest born to run1083
I don't understand how people find it so hard to gain permission. For the people who know me will agree I'm not as well spoken as I write on here lol ( joys of spell check on the I phone) haha and if I can get it then other should easy enough to, I have land in 3 different counties and have regular calls offering me more. Even off people I've never met now, I think you need to re think your approach with them and give it another go. Ray made a very valid point offer other services then just lamping and there more inclined to let you on. I always give the offer then that if he ever gets loaded with work and needs an extra helping hand then to just give me a call. I got 8000 acres just for fencing for 2 hours free of charge. 2 hours for endless fun on estate when I want to go is well worth it. so have a think at what might get you on and try again as once you get one farm the neighbours farm are normally more happy to let you on Edited November 22, 2011 by born to run1083 Quote Link to post
