Advice for "Maggie"

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for some help and I hope you're the guys to give me some advice!

I have got to control some magpies on my brother's property, he likes to feed and see the songbirds but recently there have been none to be seen thanks to the "maggies" also they are ripping my young niece's trampoline to pieces (why I don't know)

I am an experienced shot and use an Air Arms S410k, although I use it for rabbits and rats usually.

The advice I need is how to get the birds into position where I want them, I hear eggs will tempt them in as well as a torn bin bag but none of these are normally on this land so will they be suspicious or do I give them too much credit?

I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks Neil.

I agree with Deano on this one, an open carcass is all but certain to draw them in, but if a dead rabbit slit open next to your nieces trampoline is a bit too much, you could always use 1/4lb of mince, the redder the better. In my experience works just as well!

Stay hidden, they'll be on the lookout for you don't doubt it and once you get the first the others should flock in... strangely enough!

Let us now how you get on and good luck!

put a fusion razer in a steel box(a biscuit tin) turn it on and put some grass over it and watch them flock in.

trust me this works dont ask me why but it dose

How the hell did you find out about that one?.......

an old bloke told me. cant remember what he used to put in the tin as fusions was not about when he was young lol but the razer dose the same job. i think its there curiosity that draws them in. ive had 4/5 all round the box pecking at it and when you shoot the first the rest dont go far.

His wife's dildo? :haha:

Hiya Chris, Yes I have heard this before

Like you say, they are extreamly inquisative little buggers as well as being highly intelligent birds.

It's a technique I've often thought about trying but still not gotten round to it, but will do one day.

The slit rabbit technique works, but it took a while as they were not used to seeing dead open bunnies in the Goose paddock, but got there in the end.

Once they've seen or heard somthing that gets their interest they just NEED to investigate and find out what it is.

The only thing you are not allowed to do to bring them in is use shiney objects :hmm: and thats written in law I believe.

Take care

Tony

i use a crow call, and a plastic toy tub inside those kinder suprises, put in half a dozen pellets and it mimics the magpie call when you shake it, theye are very inquisative to see whats going on, i also use a falcon decoy which they go crazy for.

Well you learn something new every day. A ann summers special in a box will attract magpies... lol

Personally I use dead rabbit or mince, or a broken egg or 2. Ive also heard people using catfood on a bit of tin foil but ive not tried that myself.

Once you shoot one, then the rest will go mental and you`ll end up with a whole gang of them appearing.
