The Cropsafe Crew on our latest outing

Recommended Posts

Well it was my 50th birthday on Sunday and we had arranged for a trip today (Monday) I was a bit under the weather as you can imagine but still as eager as ever. We dropped back on to the last hedgerow we left of at last time when we nailed 56, but still plenty to go at.

You could see half the field was grazed really bad by the rabbits so the signs were good for some hectic sport and it didn't let us down.

Although the fog was really bad, the worse thing was it took longer to get light in the morning, this put us back half an hour.

When we eventually got under way the rabbits were in a good bolting mood, this makes a refreshing change on our hedgerows and makes life a bit easier. By 10am we had 23 in the van so we had a break, the flasks and sarnies came out with expectations of a good day.

The grub went down well and we were back on the job, the next set was a huge one and things got complicated then. As it happened Stevo only brought the small bag of nets so we had about 40 to go at, nowhere near enough for this one. We did put a small stop net down the line, but we really needed more purse nets. We used up what we had starting at the top and were hoping to leapfrog them as we moved down, not on your nelly, the rabbits had other ideas.

They were bolting left right and centre, the lurcher was left defenceless as the spinney we backed on to was too dense and all we could do was watch. You guessed it they all managed to run every direction apart from where the stop net was, we were diving all over the place as they hit the nets only to have another one bolt from the same hole before we could cover it with our feet. It was pandemonium but real fun, it's a shame to loose them but they are breeders for next season. We did manage 11 out of this one but lost 15 others, that's 26 in one set, that will teach us to remember ALL the net bags in future.( I must say as well these rabbits were huge and so healthy, too much of the crops in their bellies. By this time the fog was starting to drop really heavy so before it got too bad and with a long drive home for the lads we decided to stop at 50 seeing as it was my 50th birthday yesterday. This we did after a couple of hard digs and then put them out for a picture. We had 48 on the pic but 2 more were in the dog cages totalling 50.

Another cracking days sport with the lads, Stevo, Steve and Ray, as I also forgot my camera I had to take the pics on my phone so not all of us were on the pic.
