wink hound 0
the only real way to tell is by observation mate. once a hen has got a taste for it then its down hill from there,im also of the opiion that the habit is easily past onto other hens. some say it can be related to bordem, i just think it what some hens do. obviously the fewer hens you have the easier it is to solve. im lucky in that i have lots of chicken accomidation, so i tend to just half the flock, then half the offending lot again, keep going like this till you have your culprit, thats if its just the one. hope that helps. Guest MOLLY
As Winky said...observation, plus if you dont have many, you can usually figure out by their personality which one its likely to be, then its "off with her head" im afraid Get ducks, they dont seem to have half as many problems as hens do MOLL. DUCKWING 302
WELL MATE , EGG EATING ITS A BAD PROBLEM ESPECIALLY WITH CONFINED POULTRY ........ THERES MANY WAYS TO STOP THEM ............. FIRST.......... MAKE SURE THEY HAVE A GOOD BALANCED DIET , WITH A GOOD DRY SOURCE OF MINERAL AND GRIT AS WELL AS GREEN FOOD , SECOND ............ TURN NEST BOXES INTO THE WALL , SO THE HENS HAVE TO SQUEEZE INTO THEM THIS STOPS THEM REACHING IN FOR EGGS AS EASY , THIRD ............ PUT POT EGGS , GOLF BALLS IN THE NEST BOXES .. THEY SOON FIND OUT THEY CANNOT BE BROKEN AS WELL AS A FEW ON THE FLOOR OF THE PEN FOURTH ............ MAKE SURE THE EGGS ARE COLLECTED SO THEY ARENT LAID ABOUT TO BECOME BROKEN , AS EGG EATING BECOMES A HABIT THATS A FEW TO BE GOING ON WITH........... THOUGH I HAVE A GOOD FEW OTHER TRICKS FOR PERSISTANT OFFENDERS ALL THE BEST DUCKWING
FPO 0
one option I have heard off, and tried with some sucess is to blow an egg and then get a syringe full of mustard, Chill sauce /tabasco etc fill the egg up and then see what happens, I did have some sucess but at the time had 50 ish birds and a couple of eaters. One that would run up to a young POL that was laying outside and almost eat the egg before it was laid! another sign sometimes of the culprit will be if you look closely at you birds one may have a greasier looking front/ sometimes even yoke left on it. Is the egg definately being eaten? not just a soft one being laid? they will break easily and then its a free for all!! If you manage to identify the culprit but cant stop it, only really one other option, Chicken curry probably wont be enough meat on it for anything else! Best of luck! Get ducks, they dont seem to have half as many problems as hens do MOLL. Great idea, only problem we had was two drakes 4 ducks and 50 ish chickens, what did the drakes fancy Drakes wouldnt leave the chickens alone, in the end (after loseing 2 chickens) the ducks had to have thier own pen and be restricted to their own kind! Got to admit though, loved the ducks, they were great characters.

shell 42
We had the same problem a while back. Cured it in no time. Blow an egg, then fill it wil tabasco sauce, place it in the nesting box. Only had to do this once and the hen never broke an egg again. shell
diggory 130
Would it not be better to fill th eeg with explosives and a detonator.. .. that way the offending chuck will get it head blown of thus solving your problem.. .. Millet

Guest little_lloyd
You can get special nesting units which when the hen lays the egg rolls into a coolection trough! We nearly bought one for our flock at one stage! You can get them form solway feeders! http://www.solwayfeeders.com/ Look on the poultry nest boxes section

HOWEVER SOME GET READY WITH THEIR BIB AND FORK WHEN THEY SEE YER PUTTING THEM IN ANOTHER TIP IS FEED THE HEN NOTHING BUT EGGS ,,,,,,,,,,,, YEP I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY BUT IT WORKS , HOWEVER YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHICH HEN , NEXT , IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THE EGG ZAPPERS TRY THEM , THE HEN GETS A SHOCK WHEN PECKING THE EGG , THEY WERE ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR CORVIODS I THINK , AND WORK GREAT REMEMBER TURN THEM NEST BOXES INOVER TOWARDS THE WALL TRY THEM TO GO ON WITH DUCKWING
paddybarr 77
If you only have 12 try taking them away for a couple of days 1 by 1 when egg eating stops you have the culpret and neck it!!
hairybull 3
I thought chooks couldn't taste the 'hot' in chillis? As this is a natural worm remover? Alot of parrots will eat chilli's too by choice
