Ok i have shot 3 squirrels on our permsion so far but there plenty more! I have 3 fenns of but they are not going to em We found a mouse in there the other day ffs! I places 2 under dreys and the other on a fence line where one was seen running along!! All baited with nuts!

 

We have pheasants breeding at the moment and squirrels (and other feathred friends) nicking the eggs is not helping!! Anyone on here whos trapped squiirels before help out?

or live catch cage traps mate, check them regular though...daft squirrels round here always fall for them.

" Daft Squirrels " about sums it up too! L. Lloyd; If ye can't catch a squirrel then I seriously wonder what on earth it is ye doing so wrong there. I mean, they really are suicidal, much of the time.

 

Could ye let us have some more detail, please? Photo's would be tops. But at least let us know how ye setting these Fenn's. What sort and size of tunnel. What ever. Just explain what ye do, when ye set one, and why. Maybe then someone will spot an intrinsic blooper.

Ditchy as soon as i get my ole username back and computer at home working ill get some pics uplaoded!

 

But today my bait was gone and nothing in the trap, we have shot a few and shot at a few so they may be a little trap!

I think the missing bait's already given us a clue, mate. Most people simply don't realise how heavily infested the average bit of woodland ground (not to mention the trees above it) is with Wood Mice. And there in, I suspect, lies ye problem. I'd suggest Woodie's are helping themselves to ye bait. I've even known them clear up a fair spread of broadcast Whole Maize, over night.

 

So, ye've already caught " A mouse ". Bettcha he was yellow furred? Wood Mouse. Ok. Someone's already suggested peanut butter on the pan. I'd not be happy with that in your situation. Mice'll still get it. Try setting a little less fine and put ye bait (I honestly Do prefer the Crunchy variety. Gives them something more to work for) on a stick shoved in the back of the tunnel.

 

That way, ye help keep the mice from firing the traps and will still get any squirrel who comes along as he reaches for the bait. See?

I would not bait my traps if i was after squirrel...that said whatever else you would catch is a ... just keep going you'll get them in the end ... whatever else you catch is a bonus at this time of year if your catching mice then you can set far finer thatn me...which i would say is too fine ... under two traps i have woodmice living often wonder if when i take a rat out of them whether the mice have ne.ne..nee..neee...na the captive Shouldn't worry too much...gun + traps = no squirrels

The trap which had the bait taken was out of the wood abit on a fence line where squiirels reguly where seen running along! All traps had poultry pellets as bait (dont ask only thing we could find) and one trap wth nuts! Im hoping ill go check today and find a tree rat

 

Would anyone recomend attaching a fen and tunnel to a tree ?

I'd get poking/shooting the drays out mate and the get some baited cage traps down (with maze or sommit). Like Ditch says they are suicidal... their inquisitiveness is their downfall.

Thanks Lokel yokel, At the moment we do shoot them but with air rifles its fun but hard, just waiting for my mate to get his shotty and make the tree rats life hard Personlly i think the squiirels are getting a bit on the shy side I think i bit of drey poking is on the seduel for today!

YOU COULD TRY HOOP SNARING THEM ON THE FENCE LINE OR PUT SOME POLES UP IN THE TREES WITH HOOP SNARES ON.

 

I WILL JUST POINT OUT HERE THAT I HAVE NOT YET TRYED THIS METHOD BUT. PEG AND GUN SHOWED IT ME WORKING LAST SUMMER. AND THEY ARE VERY EFECTIVE.

If you go after the dreys you'll have to be quick as the trees are starting to leaf up ant that'll make seeing & shooting the buggers even harder

Dont worry i know where most of the dreys are! Its already hard anouf beacuse we are shooting a bout qauter of a mile drive of laurel trees But we still manage to force em out and secure a shot Edited April 3, 2007 by little_lloyd

I have seldom had the time to sit and wait on a squirrel. I use an "L" bracket with an 8'' board (8''w x15'' L x 1'' thick ) attached and mount it on the side of the tree. How high? 6-8 ft. or so. It's there I mount my cage trap with "souped up" peanut butter bait ....almond, walnut, acorn flavours to name a few. I also would hang an ear of field corn on a wire as eye appeal near by. Sometimes the squirrel feels safer in the tree than on the ground....by using this setup, I 've caught some that were a bit...shy. I caught thousands of squirrels in my 30 plus years as an ADC personal. Most just like that.
