patdahat 41
In the next week i am going to be buying a rifle and am undecided on which cal to get. From my asking around iv noticed that the 223 is a more common gun, there is a good selection of different bullets for them averaging about €25 a box 20. iv heard little about the 220 swift, and would like to know are the bullets dear? is there a varity of bullets for them? would there be much of a bullet drop set at inch high at a 100 yards firing at a fox at 250/300 yards? any info welcomed cheers pat.. matt_hooks 188
The swift fires the same bullet as the .223 (a .224" bullet). The swift has a much larger case capacity, and so can achieve much higher speeds. The .223 runs at about 3200fps with a 55gr pill, the swift can push the same bullet out of the barrel at a very healthy 3900fps. This obviously means a much flatter trajectory and so easier shooting at varied ranges. That said, cases for the swift are more difficult to come by, and the choice of factory ammo is limited. The .223 is much easier to source ammunition for, and cheaper. Quote Link to post
lgray88 4
If your concerned about really flat trajectory get a .22-250 same size of bullet as the .223 but with more speed im running about 3850fps with a 50gr v-max and can reload a 20 rounds for £7. The swift as mentioned is quite uncommon and brass is hard too come by also far more powder is burned so you'll get less life from your barrel. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
.22-250 if you're concerned about trajectory So long as its modded or your ears will suffer, very loud gun. Must say for normal shooting out to about 250 yards or so, never had a problem with a .223. Quote Link to post
patdahat 41
i wont be reloading, i wont be doing any massive long shooting average 250 yards, from what i see it seem's that the 223 has a better varity of ammo than the .220 and seems cheaper to run also. for better stability on a bullet what would be the best twist.. firing a 50grn bullet out to 250 yards ??? I would go for the 1 in 8 twist though if you get a tikka. because you can shoot 50's up to the heavier bullets if you did want to do a bit of longrange targeting to get to know the gun and what they can do. matt_hooks 188
Get a .243! It'll shoot 55gr flatter and faster than the 22-250, and can handle bullet weights up to 105gr. 1 Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
No experience with a .220 swift, or any other of those mentioned aside from the .223. All I can say is its a very sweet round to shoot and pretty flat to most reasonable distances. I find the 40gr more that enough for fox's. All the best. Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
Get a .243! It'll shoot 55gr flatter and faster than the 22-250, and can handle bullet weights up to 105gr. That would be my choice... 58gr Vmax though......awesome fox round... Quote Link to post

The .243 is out anyway as i would have to apply for a deer licence for that caliber (ireland). thanks for all the info everyone now time to go shopping .223 it's going to be. cheers pat.. markha 99
223 with the new Hornady 53gr superformance v-max ammo, just got some and groups just as good as remmy acutips but a lot faster and flatter Quote Link to post
andyf 144
Whats all this cr~p about 55gr .243? NO it wont shoot faster or flatter, nothing wrong with the .243 it has it's place, but 55gr (do your homework bud). In the UK I would say that if your land can justify a 22.250 and you might get a deer then go for a .243 as it's the 'same' really and it's Deer legal. But if your in 'Fox' only then the 22.250 is the king, I have a 22.250 and a .270Win, I reload, but anyway as the original post was about .220 Swift, factory ammo for the Swift is 'rocking horse sh*t', so don't even think about it, unless you are a 'reloader' Geek. The .223 is 'mighty fine' I've had several, and if factory ammo is you, then this s the boy!! AndyF Quote Link to post
