uncles rottweiler getting a bit weak on the back end

Recommended Posts

my uncles rottie is getting to around 9 now and he's noticed that his back end seems to be getting a bit weaker, he's talking about takeing him to the vets for a bit of advise but we all know that before he walks through the door its £25 then what ever else they try and push on him.

so i thought id ask if anyone has any advise on anything you can add to their diet or anything you can give him to help with building him up.

cheers

keep the weight of it, i used to keep bullmastiffs and they are big dog like rottie's. and i used to knock a good 10-12 lb of them, and they more healthy for it. And it will help there hips, as HD is big prob with heavy set dogs. Go steady with exercise at 1st , and build it up steady.!

at that age could be HD and/or arthritis, as bird says best thing to do is get as much weight off it as you can without it being unhealthy. And keep walks short and relatively frequent rather than longer walks.

If you do go to the vets and they give you metacam or previcox for arthritis, insist on regular blood tests and don't give it to it daily (as they sometimes recommend you do). Are you from Wrexham? I'm also from Wrexham and took my mastiff to Wrexham Vetinary Care with his arthritis, they put him on previcox and advised me to give it to him daily for the rest of his life. They never did a blood test! I did what they said and 8 months later he died of kidney failure. I could kick myself cos when I did my research after all this happened it's clear the Previcox killed him........why on earth I didn't do the research when they first put him on it I really don't know. If I could turn the clock back I'd have took his weight down and only given it to him when he was really stiff, but you live and learn!

He could try a McTimoney chiropractor or physio - it kept my old lurcher off meds for the last

3 years of her life ( she was 17 when pts and still wasnt showing any more joint or muscle problems) , if there decent they should show him excersizes that can be done at home

so he shouldnt need to take the dog to often.

Yumove by Lintbels, my mother's GSD is 11, he is now "bunny hopping" over obstacles like a pup!

Not the cheapest supplement on the market, but one of the best!

you're joking! FFS! I'm going to see if I can find any info on that. I had my mastiff for over 2 years and he was proper docile with people, never saw even a hint of aggression ever and then this time last year when his kidneys packed up he had to stay there overnight on a drip, a couple of days later he went downhill so I took him back there to be PTS, as the vet went to shave his leg for the jab he tried to bite him, I was absolutely gobsmacked. Now I'm wondering if they did something to him when he was staying there!!!
