is the craze with shows detrimental to the working abilities of our dogs? been going to shows for a few years now and have heard of dogs being sold for ridiculous money. one man who sold one such dog is rumoured to have a kennel of non or substandard working dogs. spoke to a man who travelled over two hundred miles to purchase an adult dog from this well known name, a guaranteed worker no less. he returned home to find out the dog was a bottler. needless to say the return journey was faster and a refund demanded. many say this man used to have good dogs but not now, but he is winning regularly at shows. so what will the future hold when people take there bitches to be mated with his dogs? i was raised to believe that the only way you can truly judge a working dog is to watch it do just that, work. i get strange looks at shows because my lurcher bears working scars, cuts and grazes from fences and the like. so if at a supposed working dog show a dog that shows signs of having been worked is going to be frowned upon then where do we go from here? will lurchers turn into three types as they did with the greyhound? the showdog, the racing dog and lastly the coursing dog. why don't these people keep dogs that have already been ruined by the show craze? at shows now they even have classes for working dogs, are they not all supposed to be working dogs with the exception of the pups and veterans?

look forward to hearing comments of real dogmen

When I have the chance I will compete and Judge shows, the majority of times I go to shows it is to meet old mates and have a laugh winning a rossete is a bonus.

I also have part in organising a show the Judges I pick would never down grade a marked terrier or scarred lurcher ?? why because they work dogs themselves.

I personally believe the only thing that will ruin working dogs are the people who breed or work them, people who instead of seeing the dog working before buying go for the quick fix and buy from a show,or instead of breeding worker to worker, breed show champ to show champ

Well as I am probably one of the dreadful people who do show their dogs, id like to comment on a working Terrier show I visited a couple of years ago. WELL KNOWN Terrier judge, who placed a black Patt first in his class then gave him champion terrier. I and most others present heard the judge say "looks like he's seen a bit" to which the owner did not reply. The owner of said dog took great delight in telling my friend afterwards as he was loading up the car, that the judge knew absolutely nothing about working dogs as his dog got his face chewed up by beind dragged down the road by a car! However he shows him a lot now because the so-called terrier workers think he works it!:laugh::laugh:

DAWN ,,

A FEW YRS AGO , I WAS UP IN NORTHUMBERLAND AT A SHOW TO SEE A LAD ............ WHILE THERE WE WERE CLASHING OUR GUMS AND GENERALLY PUTTING THE DOG WORLD TO RIGHTS :D , I NOTICED A FELLA WITH A BORDER , YOU KNOW THE TYPE ALL MOLESKINS AND SHINEY BOOTS .... NEXT THING I SAW THE SAME FELLA IN A DIFFERENT COAT / HAT ETC SHOWING A RUSSEL ?, ........... SO I KEPT AN EYE ON HIM ............. THE UPSHOT WAS HE WAS SHOWING TERRIERS IN EVERY CLASS WITH A DIFFERENT DISGUSE IN EACH THAT WOULD HOPEFULLY BE SYMBIOTIC WITH THE DOG/ JUDGE  ........ BEST ONE WAS WHEN HE SHOWED THE FELLS , HE WAS RE - DRESSED IN DIGGING GEAR COVERED IN MUD :icon_eek:

PATHETIC OR WHAT ????

TO ME ITS JUST ANOTHER EXCUSE TO KEEP AWAY FROM PRETENDERS

ALL THE BEST

A mate of mine had a small rough coated Jack Russell. At a show someone told him she looked just like a Lucas terrier.....for over a year he put her in the 'pup' class and won nearly everytime...i think she was nearly 2 when he stopped :D

Just thought :hmm: ...you never see classes for Lucas anymore?

MOLL.

i have had lurchers for 40 years and there is not a man in this country i would allow to judge my dogs in a showring my dogs are judged on what they do out in the field my opinion is if you want to show dogs buy a poodle my opinion is the majority of those judges who profess to know dogs know jackshit

its just a bit of fun.....i go to one or two each year to support them and we have such a good laugh. its actually embarrassing to win a rossette with a dog i think as all the mates stood round start taking the p#ss constantly. :D

"Shows" have never ruined a single dog....its "people" that have..... ;)
