is the craze with shows detrimental to the working abilities of our dogs? been going to shows for a few years now and have heard of dogs being sold for ridiculous money. one man who sold one such dog is rumoured to have a kennel of non or substandard working dogs. spoke to a man who travelled over two hundred miles to purchase an adult dog from this well known name, a guaranteed worker no less. he returned home to find out the dog was a bottler. needless to say the return journey was faster and a refund demanded. many say this man used to have good dogs but not now, but he is winning regularly at shows. so what will the future hold when people take there bitches to be mated with his dogs? i was raised to believe that the only way you can truly judge a working dog is to watch it do just that, work. i get strange looks at shows because my lurcher bears working scars, cuts and grazes from fences and the like. so if at a supposed working dog show a dog that shows signs of having been worked is going to be frowned upon then where do we go from here? will lurchers turn into three types as they did with the greyhound? the showdog, the racing dog and lastly the coursing dog. why don't these people keep dogs that have already been ruined by the show craze? at shows now they even have classes for working dogs, are they not all supposed to be working dogs with the exception of the pups and veterans?

look forward to hearing comments of real dogmen

A show for me is somewhere to go during the summer months and have a craic with the lads about the previous seasons work me and my dogs have had,and also raise a few quid for the clubs that are running the show. You do get people there just for the rosettes but I dont think it has a detrimental effect at all on the genuine lads who get to the shows who work there dogs.

Ive done a fair bit of judging, and imo a dog with scars, shouldnt be penalised ,neither should he be rewarded ,he might just be a clumsy sod,as long as the marks on the dog dont in any way affect its working ability there is no problem,as to why some one would travel a great distance to buy a pup from a well known show winner ,I think it would be prudent of me to refrain from commenting, all you should be able to guarantee from such a dog is its general confirmation,in the field its "Handsome is as Handsome does "isnt it?

most show winners ive saw are not hard worked and are well muscled in summer were most hard working dogs keep healthy but not ripped till sep etc ,all showing is detremental to working dogs if taken serously non worker to non worker then the slopy slide of beer tent braggerand the summer hare catcher etc i think shows are for yun uns and well thats about it , i like my own kind who hautthe feilds a first light and late on with lamp moonlight whatever,

To be fair to judges, how are the ment to judge fairly at a lurcher show? There is no breed standard to use as a referance too. If they were judging say german shepards, there would be a specific breed standard to jusdge against but how can you judge a lurcher? It's not a job I would thank you for and too be honest I don't go to many shows.

RIGHT LADS ,

PIN YER EARS BACK ..............

THERE SHOULD NEVER BE A STANDARD FOR A LURCHER OR TERRIER ........ SIMPLE AS !!!!

THE ONLY STANDARD WE NEED IS THE WORKING FIELD ...............

THE SHOWMEN ARE A BUNCH OF FECKIN FOOLS WHO , PICK OUT LITTLE BITS OF THE STANDARD AND EXAGERATE THEM TO THE POINT WHERE THEY BECOME CARTOON LIKE IN THEIR APPEARENCE , THIS HAS HAPPENED IN EVERYTHING FROM BIRDS TO DOGS  ..........

IVE HAD DOGS A LONG TIME AND NEVER SHOW ONE !! HOW MANY CAN SAY THAT ???

, IVE JUDGED AN ODD SHOW , AND YEP PUT UP WORKERS EVERYTIME I COULD , TO BE HONEST SHOWS MAKE ME SICK ....... AND I FEEL THAT IF THERE WAS NO MORE SHOWS THE WORKING TERRIER AND LURCHER WOULD BE BETTER OFF ........... WHO THE FECK WOULD PAY THOUSANDS FOR A TERRIER WHO WOULDNT WORK JUST SO HE COULD WIN A FEW 50p ROSETTES ??? AS ONE IRISH SO- CALLED TERRIERMAN .... HA ! ......... HAS DONE A FEW YRS BACK

PERSONALLY I THINK ITS PATHETIC :censored:

RANT OVER :bye:

I always manicure the nails,..after all,..a nice neat foot is pleasing to the Judges eye,.plus it will save his hands from scratches that could so easily turn septic...I can see why you don't win any shows :tongue2:

Just getting the ferret breeding hutches and spacious 'Courts' all organised for the show season,...the poor devils have been sitting around all Winter just waiting for the Summer... :clapper:

Hope to see you in the Ring,...oops,.Show ring I mean...not t'other fecker...
