jimmy.jim86 1
Hi all just thought id show you all my muntie head that i've just received back from the taxidermist, did a fantastic job, pics are before its hung as ive got to cut a shield for it this weekend but really impressed. Its not a fantastic example but, taxidermist said it would be about 5 and if shot last year before its antlers had gone back it would have had a very good set, but as it was my first wanted to keep it. cheers james Edited November 17, 2011 by jimmy.jim86 Quote Link to post

gerfalcon 13
James I'd have to question the age placed on your buck by the taxidermist. By the age of 5 that buck would begin to show definite signs of territorial fights with other bucks, torn ears and facial and neck scaring. I can't see any evidence of any from your photo. Muntjac bucks are aggressive creatures, especially where competition for territory and does is concerned. They are also difficult to age simply from examination of teeth wear. An un-exact science in any deer species once they have all erupted let alone Muntjac. Enjoy him on your wall. I'm sure his age is irrelevant in your appreciation. Quote Link to post
jimmy.jim86 1
steve dave spacher from leicester. gerfalcon, i understand where your coming from, my taxidermist is a very accomplished stalker and certainly knows his stuff, this muntie was shot on my farm and ive watched the deer for a long time, we dont have many around at all, over a large area of 1000ish acres. as we have a very large fallow herd they dominate the area. but again its no science. tommydeer 2
If there is a small density of animals in the area then chances are there wont be too many males for him to compete with. In the past ive seen bucks which have gone well over 70 cic without a scrape on them. With regards his age, muntjac bucks are a lot easier to age than other species of the same gender due to the length of their pedicle. Each year when they cast they lose a little off it, thefore you'll notice young bucks have a much greater length of pedicle compared to the older boys who are often a lot closer to the skull. 1 Quote Link to post
