Ideation 8,216
Woke up today and it was misty, damp and cold. Which is better than misty, damp and warm, so i decided to have a little mooch this morning with the dog and gun, just to stretch my legs and do something a bit different. Had a nice walk a long the river, and managed a pheasant and pigeon for my efforts, although i missed a woodcock i should have hit, and didn't spot some ducks (until too late) that would have made a good shot. But anyway, can't complain. Went home, had some food, and did various tasks that needed doing, and then decided to swap the gun for ferrets and venture back out, as there was an hour or two of light left. Walked local, to a gully that usually holds a few, sent the dog in around the middle, and he soon had a few pheasants moving, then i lost sight of him, and got no response to the whistle. Had a look about and whistled a bit more, and out from under some cover clinging to the side of a muddy banking, appeared the mutt, only to head straight back in, so obviously something of interest. Got over to him and he was marking a nice little set, which i duly netted up and sent a ferret down, after a bit of rumbling the bunny slammed the net down the banking, and the dog neatly fielded it. Nets off and the dog scooted off to have a good search about, following scent lines here and there, heading toward the neck of the gully, after a while i called him back, and again, no response. So i climbed out of the gully and made my way around the outside, as the cover in the neck is too thick for a person to push through. Once again, i found the mutt marking a set under some tight cover. Netted up and entered the ferret again, lots of rumbling back and forth (during which i noticed an unetted hole and shoved my jacket into it quickly) and the silence. I waited for a while and then decided i might as well remove my jacket and net the hole beneath, and just as i turned around, the bunny bolted into a net under the cover, which didn't purse quite right, but well enough to slow him down long enough for me to grab him. Nets off once again, and back up into the main part of the gully, heading toward home, on the way, the dog once again shot under a holly tree and gave a good mark on a nice little set there, some holes under the tree and some away up the banking. Netted up and left the dog outside, while i crawled under the tree to enter the ferret and cover the holes there, and after a little bit there was a rumble, thump and squeal as the rabit vacated the dogs side. Took the nets off and went round, to find a happy dog holding on to bunny and looking pleased with himself. Packed up and headed for the home side of the gully to climb the fence, and as we neared, the dog put a cock bird out of some cover, who didn't quite judge his flight well enough and dinged off the fence, to be snapped up and added to the bag. So not a bad little bag for a couple of short walks. ATB Edited November 16, 2011 by Ideation 3 Quote Link to post

lloydus 29
Hi Ideation, Nice write up. I see your from south wales. I'm living near blackwood area at moment. Whats the best way to get into ferreting? Is it easy to buy ferrets around here? Thanks Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
Cheers guys! Tomo - Aye a game pie is planned, just a shame i didn't add the woodcock and duck to the bag, but i do have some veni and duck in the freezer, so happy days! SR - He's a cracking little worker, he's just a little b*****d as well He's one of those dogs, that as soon as his paws hit the ground, he's hunting, and he will keep going until he finds something. He takes you for a walk, rather than the other way around. Can't fault his work ethic, his bottle or his nose, but sometimes i wish he'd fecking listen to me a bit more lloydus - The best way, is probably to find someone to take you out (much easier if you have land yourself to take them on) and to teach you the basics and see if you like it etc. Ferrets are pretty common in the South Wales area (probably more so than rabbits to be honest), but this time of year it can be tough finding them, as most of the litters have gone, and most folk would rather sell their own liver than a good working ferret. But they are about if you look Quote Link to post
simonrocco 175
i once had a dog like that he was a jack russel he was a brilliant worker but once he got on a sent he would go deaf and follow the sent iv seen him 4 fields away once and he was still going with his nose to the ground i had to get rid of him in the end cause every time i took it out i would lose it for hours at a time you'd spend more time looking for the dog than actually hunting if he would have listened he would have been a brilliant little dog he came from down your was i got him off my mate who got him off some lads from wales.atb Quote Link to post
