Irish Lurcher 1,013
No moon, good cloud cover, good wind, night for the lamp. During a brief conversation with a farmer while fishing last week and the subject of hunting popped up and we were asked to check out some of his land for rabbits, which we did. And it’s transpired that we have stumbled across a wee gem of a place, but the session was cut short due to blue twisting her leg, and the fact that she decided to off-load all her training and go after the rabbit’s cowboy style. I had digger with me on the night, but held him back in order to get blue well tuned onto the lamp, seemed to be plenty of bunnies out and we had four in a short space of time, ever get the feeling that you brought the wrong dog with you, while digger is well capable of running any bunny, he is a mangler and ya don’t get things back in one piece. I was full sure that a large bag was achievable on the night and that blue had turned another corner regarding her training and that she would prove to us tonight that she was knocking on the door. During the few runs that we did have we also called up two Reds, the first one made to it a hole, the second one is missing half a tail, it made it to some thick cover and digger grabbed it by its tail and was felt with a mouth full of fur, lol. Blue was running well on the lamp and on her fourth slip she turned the bunny inside out and let out a wee yap and returned with the bunny. It was only on closer inspection that we discover that she had hurt her leg, that put paid to our session. Would have brought my rabbit dog on the night had she not popped a toe other night. We did manage another three rabbits on the journey back to the jeep; let’s just say that the bunnies were well ventilated when we got them back off digger, ferret food. I mentioned that Blue off-loaded her training during the session, she was off the opinion that the slip was not required and that hunting up is the way forward, I think its back to basics for her. I plan another serious session for this land in the coming weeks, but this time we shall be better prepared for the number of bunnies that are there for the taking. It’s a learning curve when tackling new land, and we are ready. Edited November 16, 2011 by Irish Lurcher Quote Link to post
