samearl14 11
Iv heard that about being bred for woodcock. But a woman dog trainer i know spent ages telling me theyre called cockers because the are 'cock sure of themselves' ie cocky. Quote Link to post
Lab 10,979
Just for the record, they are called 'cockers' because they were originally bred down, to be used for hunting / shooting woodcock. Mooch - I know what you are saying mate, but that is more in the training than the breed. Well i never knew that.................. Quote Link to post
B.P.R 2,798
Finally after the post being up A while there is some debate. Thanks for the help there. I will say that having little experience with gundogs apart from watching them on beat days that they are a joy to watch work. And this lab I have got here, part trained would fit her chunky arse through a seive if she was bringing something back to you. P.s as I was writing this on my phone out with the dog, she just got stuck in a fence! Maybe she won't fit through everything haha. Thanks lads 1 Quote Link to post
samearl14 11
When my pup was like a lot smaller, she tried to squeeze through a fox gate on one of my pheasant pens . forced herself half way through then just sat there crying. Thought i was going to have to send my mate home for some bolt croppers but i managed to squeeze her out in the end lol Quote Link to post

Dave C 63
My Lab will squeeze through anything if there is scent there, she flys through rabbit runs in the brambles like a terrier. i suppose only being 21" at the shoulder helps. Dave. Quote Link to post

mossy_500 0
just an idea. . If your thinking of choosing between them have a look at a good sprocker. . Springer-cocker cross. . .my 4 year old bitch is a pure ANIMAL!!LITERALLY!!i can honestly say she would hunt any springer OR cocker to the ground. .also their obedience and loyalty couldnt be got from a dog that could speak english. .their just as strong as an ox and with a proper diet their stamina could be matched with an olympic athlete Quote Link to post

pigeon dave 1
So what's te advantages of having a springer/ cocker over a Labrador? Who does the job best in your opinion? old one but true 99% times A Labrador is born half trained A Spaniel dies half trained Quote Link to post
PoshPikey 560
the clue is in the names: Labrador retriever - brings stuff back. Springer spaniel - springs game. Quote Link to post
