Hope Bourne "A Wild Harvest" is worth a read. She describes the economics of her version of a self sufficient lifestyle - very minimalist....

good luck to your friend. i try to be a little self sufficient. have a large plot, keep lots of chickens, also ferret and fish. but all this costs money seeds, plants, feedstuff for the chickens also time and effort. also for the larger animals vet bills. but i am only playing at it.hope he makes a success of his venture.

isnt an acre bit small for that,

you would have to be pretty shrewd at what you did

maybe he had say 10 acres could grow his feed for animals but then he would need a small tractor or a cart horse.

then what if its bad year for growing crops or a fox gets the poultry or piglets.

i seem to remember seymore saying that a minimum of 7 acres was required

a man called john seymore has written a few books on the subject, his guide to self sefficency is very good.

Good author. I think with regards to the original question it depends on what standard of living the fella wants, including his diet etc...........

the complete guide to self sufficency

I will get it,thanks for the tip :victory: I have done the self-sufficiency bit abroad where it was relatively easy as I had a couple of quid tucked away for emergencies and a small boat and house,I prefer my comforts nowadays,we soften with age,but wouldnt mind a couple of acres somewhere just in case, always worth while preparing for emergencies :victory:

It's a lot harder than folk think, especially in winter, and especially in the first few years until systems are sorted. Also there is always a spanner in the works, such as getting ill, or needing to treat stock etc, which leads to a need for cold, hard, cash. I've tried it in various places, and some countries are easier than other. U.K is pretty tough.
