Your right, not all collies, Labs or lurchers are bred for work..... however if someone wanted a pup to be a worker (which you would assume based on the nature of this website) they would be looking to get them off parents that had prooved themselves, doing what they are intended to do over several years.

 

You wouldnt get a collie pup who's ancestry consisted only of pets and expect it to be in anyway comparable to a farm bred collie who's working ancestry goes back generations etc and expect it to be in as good. Same as if you wanted a guide dog you would want to get one from parents that you know can perform that function.
