I'd get her to the vet for a scan - it costs about £30 and in this case will probably be worth the money. They should be able to tell you how far on she is, roughly how many pups there are and how big/well developed the pups are. That might give you an idea of whether or not she'll deliver them easily or if you might have problems.

It is possible to have a pregnant bitch spayed - the pups are obviously aborted as part of the procedure, but it can well and truly f**k with the bitch as it sends her hormones into an uproar and personally I'd say it's to be avoided.

Assuming she delivers the pups ok she might struggle to rear them because she's still immature, so you might have to put some work in with the litter, but once they're weaned and she's recovered there's no reason why she shouldn't work well.

For now the priority is to make sure she's very very well nourished so she has the physical resources to carry, deliver and raise the pups, Most bitches are a big radged after raising a litter and a youngster that hasn't finished growing herself will be more so. Poor nutrition at this stage could have long term consequences so make sure she's as well fed and physically fit as possible.

Just my opinion, others will no doubt have more knowledge than me,

This has to be a wind up. You are afraid to take the bitch in because your a traveler. How would the vet know, you have it tattooed on your forhead? What would you do if something goes wrong during the birth or if one or your dogs gets injured. You said no silly remarks but a silly question gets a silly answer. I hope the bitch and pups die so they won't suffer in the future because your afraid of them getting taken away. :bad:

I would be more concerned that the 13 year old owner will be able to cope, firstly with the birth: will he know what to do if the bitch has problems delivering the pups? Has he got someone who can help if things go wrong? Secondly, has he got somewhere safe and warm (we are heading towards colder weather at this time of year) the bitch can whelp? Away from other dogs, and quiet where she will feel secure.

Thirdly, has he thought what he will do with the pups if she does have them OK?

In an ideal world the mating wouldn't have happened, but it has, and you and the lad need to get organised and have a plan in place for the bitch and pups. Failing that, have you thought of getting the bitch somewhere to stay temporarily until she has reared the pups? A foster home with someone who knows what they are doing with bitches and pups, whelping, rearing etc.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Book-Bitch-J-M-Evans/dp/1860540236 - this book is supposed to be the one to read up on all matters concerning pregnancy and birth...

http://www.dorwest.com/Catalogue/Veterinary-Medicine/Raspberry-Leaf-tablets - these people are pretty helpful if you phone them up...

Can someone on here not recommend you a decent vet in the area?

Good luck with the bitch and pups.

I'm sick of reading posts like this because I don't understand why people have dogs and can't take responsibility for ensuring 'accidental matings' do not happen. Firstly, I believe anyone who keeps entire dogs or bitches should keep them safe and under control especially if they own a bitch. Basically, that's it. And no, I have never had an 'accident', I monitor my bitches daily and know if they are in heat then keep them locked away from where male dogs can get at them. If you chose to look upon me as being perfect - go on ahead.

This is a public forum, for open debate - you can't tell people when to or when not to comment just because you don't agree with other people's views. As I say, I'm sick of reading of posts like these on here every week. Hope the outcome for the bitch is good.
