ferreting with dogs opinion?

i have always wanted to ask this. when use are out ferreting do u keep the dog/dogs off the lead or not? and marking when u have shuved the ferrets down the wholes do u keep the dog on the lead or keep them off. i have went out ferreting with a few people on this and obviously all people do it there own way i usually go ferreting with kx 100 and his dogs we do well most of the times but i like it when u keep the dog of the lean for the lurcher or terrier to get the rabbit/rabbist what are you opinion alb daryl

i keep my terriers on the lead when the ferrets down the set and the lurcher on slip cause there not used to the ferrets and would kill them any chance they got espesially the terriers. atb pal

idealy dog working free. some situations have to peg the dog down when he has marked ie on 1 permission a number of burrows are along a fence line next to a busy road.

if they are quiet and dont go round the holes nocking nets off and ok with ferrets leave them off the lead otherwise keep them on. my dog is ok with ferrets but would have her head down holes disturbing nets, so shes always on lead as soon as she has marked up.

Keep my lurcher off, but sometimes have to keep the terriers on the lead as they also want to go to ground and poke there heads through the nets!...... Alot depends on if your dogs are broken to ferrets.

if your dogs arnt broken to ferrets ,, they shouldnt be ferreting.......

 

pesonly i like them off,, mine tends to follow the action ,, interspting most bolters....

 

but there are times and places where dogs arnt worth taking,,

would be no use to me if the dogs not broke to ferrets you got enough going on without worrying if the dog gonna kill your best worker,pups can be a pain till they get the hang of whats going on other than that dog on a lead/pegged down aint gonna catch many that slip nets is it

i keep my lurcher off the lead as he gets to the bunnys before me and holds then till i get another net on but alot of people i know like them on the lead
