Sprockers what is the benefit of the cross?

Recommended Posts

I really don't see why people are obsessed just lately with crossing breeds. Gundogs are being crossed sprockers, springadors, labradoodle etc but why? Just pick one of the pure breeds that suits the time of shooting you do. If these crosses were any good surely they would have been done years ago. Don't even get started on pet dogs look in the local paper and every possible combination of dog is being crossed and the charging stupid money to match the dogs stupid breed name they radomly came up with.

Sorry if it seems like a rant but it is, I wish people would stick to breeding two of the same breed.

All I would say is please don't believe that piece of paper you get from the kennel club is any guarantee that your dog is a cocker or springer when it could well be a sprocker ;)

I hope not I thought I had two labs lol

the abuse of the kc includes labs I know for a stud that apparently sired a litter a year after it died :wallbash:

it can 5 years after it died you only av to av seman frozen and stored if you wanted to keep a line going so no need to bang ya head

Aye but the one I know for was never milked.

given that originally cockers and springers could come from the same litter and where only determined by weight is a sprocker really a mix?

I have seen many springers that fall into the breed standard of cocker and vice versa to my mind the kc has forgotten why the breed standards where introduced the shame is that the kc are the only European breed register that do not insist on working certification for the dog before it is allowed to breed and because of this I feel that there credibility as a judge of breed standard is compromised also the system is so open to abuse that many so called kc reg dogs are far from pure

so in answer to your question I firmly believe after picking a dog from working parents it is "the nut behind the mutt" rather than pure or no thumbs.gif

Exactly.... i had an argument with some who had a so called sprocker on a shoot one day, he said there advantage was..... The height or a Cocker but the stanima of a Springer.... what a load of shit...My Springer is smaller than my Cocker, work that one out but both work all day and just as hard! I think its just the "In thing" at the moment.

Most springers you see on the shoots round here nowadays are cocker size/build anyway, what happened to good old springers built like tanks? Some of the best springers i've seen were bow legged and ugly but would work any cover and would find and retrieve anything.

To my mind the field trials have caused the gradual decline of the true working spaniel they require a dog that works like a whirlwind for 10 minutes at a time hence the decrease in size and stature whilst in the real world we want dogs to go all day hunting a cover methodically and at a sensible pace, people seem to think that if a pedigree is not all red then the dogs are no good this is just not true, thankfully there are lines still going that breed a proper dog uncompromised by trial blood but they are few and far between
