Sprockers what is the benefit of the cross?

Recommended Posts

this cross has'nt been used in any great numbers or around long enough to be able to have any real comparisons made with ess or cocker it seams to me that now and again they become the flavour of the month at the moment crosses are out and cockers are inn well thats how it seems in my neck of the woods .so my opinion based on the crosses i have seen is they work but as with all dogs only as good as the person who trains and handles them .would be interesting to see how a cross turned out if a trainer like openshaw took one or two in hand.

given that originally cockers and springers could come from the same litter and where only determined by weight is a sprocker really a mix?

I have seen many springers that fall into the breed standard of cocker and vice versa to my mind the kc has forgotten why the breed standards where introduced the shame is that the kc are the only European breed register that do not insist on working certification for the dog before it is allowed to breed and because of this I feel that there credibility as a judge of breed standard is compromised also the system is so open to abuse that many so called kc reg dogs are far from pure

so in answer to your question I firmly believe after picking a dog from working parents it is "the nut behind the mutt" rather than pure or no

I have bred tow lots of sprockers out of my ess bitch and my mates cocker dog they where bred as my ess is on the small side and i didnt want a massive ess dog covering her and causing problems in birth but after the first litter we discovered you get the cocker attitude and interest with out the nuttyness they sometimes present and then u get the stamina and brains of the ess but that might be just our mix and luck but both litters all work and work well and two owners want another but i agreed i would only breed two litters for people that wanted them and wouldnt breed any more we have kept one from each litter and are over the moon with them the were easy to train and very ver biddable without the nuttyness they will work like a cocker or a ess under any conditions and are lovely little dogs and are in between a springer and cocker size so will handle most game well. We also use them for flushing to lurchers and works amazingly too. We are very happy with them but sure someone will disagree but i would breed more of these given half the chance.

Been thinking about this and think it may be usefull used as an outcross type scenario, get rid of any faults or to introduce desired traits on either side etc :hmm:

Could you not just use decent springers / cockers though?

In all honesty i have seen some handy sprockers and even handy springerdors. But none of them have been a patch on the good cockers and springers i have seen.

I really don't see why people are obsessed just lately with crossing breeds. Gundogs are being crossed sprockers, springadors, labradoodle etc but why? Just pick one of the pure breeds that suits the time of shooting you do. If these crosses were any good surely they would have been done years ago. Don't even get started on pet dogs look in the local paper and every possible combination of dog is being crossed and the charging stupid money to match the dogs stupid breed name they radomly came up with.

Sorry if it seems like a rant but it is, I wish people would stick to breeding two of the same breed.

All I would say is please don't believe that piece of paper you get from the kennel club is any guarantee that your dog is a cocker or springer when it could well be a sprocker ;)
