ianh 83
i feel very lucky this time, thanks again for all the info, im glad there shouldnt be any lasting damage, made me think about giving up runnin him seeing him like that, i was in a right state as like i have said he is my companion, i live alone with him and i dont know what id do without him. but i know he wouldnt be happy not working, i guess ill just have to write it down to experience, and i will never be working him again without some glucose syrup with me, but long before that he is gonna be getting a lot fitter. DogMagic 461
He was hypoglycaemic, like Vin said. He'll only crash and fit once all the glucose is burnt up. That could be over an hour after a hard run. The liver released some stored glucose and he came round, and he was wiped out afterwards. You can buy something called hypostop, which is basically glucose syrup in a syringe with a nozzle instead of a needle. You put the nozzle in the dogs mouth and squeeze in the syrup. you can do it when the dog is unconcious. If the dog hasn't got much glucose stored in it's liver then they don't always come round. Do you mean this stuff mate? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GLUCO-GEL-FORMERLY-KNOWN-HYPOSTOP-3X25G-TUBES-/290626056547?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Mobility_Disability_Medical_ET&hash=item43aaa9b163 Quote Link to post
ianh 83
There's a technical description for this condition, am sure it was "Sandymere" on here who wrote about it, maybe have a look through hi old posts, he explained it really well. Glad to hear your dog is still with you, mine cost me £1300 in the vets when it happened to me! i tell you what that topic is very good and a lot of info, most i struggle with but very insightful big up sandymere, i know if this ever happens again, and god i hope not, i will be straight to the vet, from my observations it didnt go too far and im very lucky the dog has normal coloured urine, although a fair bit of it. and he isnt sore to the touch or walking badly so i guess im/ he is one of the lucky ones. proper shook me up though, and he'll be at my side 24/7 for next few days just to make sure. lurcher330 2,301
I have had the same happen to me with a dog ,he even went blind for a while but this dog was very hard on himself didn't do much work the night it happened but he would tire himself out from pulling on the slip alone but from then on i made sure he was super fit and when i would take him out i would bring a few biscuits or something with me and give him the odd one after a few slips just to keep his sugar levels up,hope he comes back to full strenght for ye mate Edited November 7, 2011 by lurcher330 Quote Link to post

Guest born to run1083
he,s done too much mate..as soon as he,s stopped he,s gone hypo..bit like when someone who is Diabetic.. he needed some glucose back in his system..your lucky he didnt go too far and end up perminatly foooked. dogs will run and run if theres game in front of them..its up to you to know how fit your own dog is and what his limitations are.. you should know now..dont push him as hard next time and get him fitter if you want to put him on long runs.. ive done it myself and plenty of other people have seen it done.. just be carefull and thank yourself lucky. happy hunting pal. good post mate and very true, happened to a mates pup but much worste. Just Managed to revive him, very close indeed. Very good point about the owner knowing there own dogs limits Quote Link to post
ianh 83
3 turns is right about hitting the wall. My mates bull x died in the back of the car last week. Ran itself into the ground. thats the problem mate hes a bullx his drive is ridiculous and he would literally run himself to death every time we go lamping if we had enough game and i didnt stop him first, even when he is fit, and he ran this with my mates saluki cross, he really isnt meant for that stuff.
