ianh 83
want some advice as i dont know what happened.... went for a moonlit mooch last night with my mates dog, very good land for some of the longer running game. my dog is not fit, not near still as he been injured fora while. so he was on lead most of time because of the chance of some runs he aint ready for. anyway we was towards the end of a long walk near the village so i let him off to play with mates dog briefly before we got back, anyway they ended up putting something up and a long run ensued for them both, they both came back, tired but ok. so back on lead and home we go, still about a mile to my mums house (our destination) nice gentle walk home and dogs fine all the way, not showing he tired or anything. anyway got back and noticed he was behaving very funny, then he started staggering about and sniffing the floor constantly like he was looking for something then kind of convulsing and fast heart beat heavy breathing, almost like he was having a fit and he wasnt responding to me at all, so panicking now really scared, he aint just a working dog to me hes my companion, best mate and i would be truly lost without him, might get a lot of slating for that but thats the fact. so jumped in motor dog in and back round to my mates who has the number for emergency local vet. by the time we got there, must of been no more than 5 or 10 mins from start to end of the episode. although it seemed ages at the time. dog was ok, stopped shaking, seems ok then was just calm and responsive again, just seemed tired now. so we didnt end up going to the vet. hes fine now this morning seems ok. so did the dog blow? was at least twenty mins since h'ed run until this happened could it be some kind of fit? poison? i dont have a clue what it was and it really scared me if anyone has had this happen would really appreciate some help with it. Guest vin
he,s done too much mate..as soon as he,s stopped he,s gone hypo..bit like when someone who is Diabetic.. he needed some glucose back in his system..your lucky he didnt go too far and end up perminatly foooked. dogs will run and run if theres game in front of them..its up to you to know how fit your own dog is and what his limitations are.. you should know now..dont push him as hard next time and get him fitter if you want to put him on long runs.. ive done it myself and plenty of other people have seen it done.. just be carefull and thank yourself lucky. happy hunting pal. ianh 83
yeah like i said in the post i was not running him, he just put something up with my mates dog, we were just walking back into the village and they went into the last field before the village. i know he isnt fit thats why he was on lead most of walk, but he has to get fit somehow so let him have a play with my mates dog at end of walk for 5 mins, he isnt even the sort of dog for that particular quarry i dont use him for that. the reason im posting is because it was at least twenty mins after we been out, he was pulling at lead and sniffing about for at least 20 mins on way home seemed happy, showed no sign of being hypo then, i thought it would be straight after the run as i have seen it before in my mates dog who did this in summer but it was as soon as it was over, he actually collapsed straight after, but with my dog he was at least 20 mins after his run, maybe more to be honest??? ianh 83
and will there be permanent damage if it was this? Quote Link to post

skycat 6,174
I'd be more worried that the dog had run its back off: damaged the muscles. Keep the dog warm, very warm: like under a heat lamp or rugged up or if in the house, well out of draughts. Massage gently with the flat of your hands over the big back muscles and down hind legs. The dog could seize up over the next couple of days. Make sure the dog is well hydrated too. 1 Quote Link to post

chartpolski 25,471
Sounds like he had a fit thru' running him to hard and unfit. You're lucky he came round, I know dogs that didn't !! If he were mine, I'd have him checked out by a vet. Cheers. Quote Link to post

B.P.R 2,798
so what is the immediate action if the dog was to fit? get some glucose into it, just water or neither? Quote Link to post
3 Turns 326
ALRIGHT MATE. YOUR DOG HIT THE WALL I THINK AND HAD A SLIGHT FIT/TANK WAS EMPTED WITH A HARD RUN AND BEING UNFIT. TOO MUCH TOO SOON,THIS COLD SNAP HASN,T HELPED EITHER. BUILD UP FITNESS AGAIN ,SEEN A FEW HIT THE WALL OVER THE YEAR,S AND NOT RECOVER. ATB Quote Link to post
Strong Stuff 2,171
There's a technical description for this condition, am sure it was "Sandymere" on here who wrote about it, maybe have a look through hi old posts, he explained it really well. Glad to hear your dog is still with you, mine cost me £1300 in the vets when it happened to me! Quote Link to post
yeeharr 41
He was hypoglycaemic, like Vin said. He'll only crash and fit once all the glucose is burnt up. That could be over an hour after a hard run. The liver released some stored glucose and he came round, and he was wiped out afterwards. You can buy something called hypostop, which is basically glucose syrup in a syringe with a nozzle instead of a needle. You put the nozzle in the dogs mouth and squeeze in the syrup. you can do it when the dog is unconcious. If the dog hasn't got much glucose stored in it's liver then they don't always come round.
