johnny boy68 11,726
As some of you may remember, a couple of weeks ago, Johnnyboy68 and myself carried out a bit of cross border raiding, and payed a visit to Malc1 and his lovely wife, for the first time, for a spot of bunny bashing. A great day was had by all, and a good bag achieved. Well, today it was time for round to at the English Bunnies! As the days are drawing in and it's a fair drive for us Welsh, the plan was to leave earlier than last time, so 4.45 am came and my alarm went off, and miracle of miracles, i managed to drag myself out of bed, Got my stuff in the car, that i had sorted last night, collared up and boxed my two older jills, and loaded the dog. At 5:15 Young Tom the apprentice appeared (dropped off by his dad), and after a cup of tea, we were on the road for 5.30, making it to Johnnyboys at 6am, and heading straight off, Team Wales (almost) completed by Johnny, his two dogs and another pair of jills! We made good time on the way up, and made it to Malc1's for about 7.30, and after a cup of tea, Team England, comprising of Malc1, his lovely wife Lee, and their son Liam, Murph the lurcher, Lala (legend) the russel, and the latest addition Bam Bam, the 9 week old russel / pat x, led the way. As you can see, we were going mob handed, a proper team effort! Anyway, we shortly pulled into the place we were to ferret, and unloaded the cars, letting the dogs loose, pretty much straight away, Finn, the whippet, disappeared into a reed bed, and came back out on the ass of a rabbit, dissapearing from view for some time, and then coming back minus bunny, one side coated in thick mud, evidence of a tumble. We decided this time to start at the opposite end of the property than we had previously, heading for an oak tree, which turned out to have a decent enough set under it, holes either side of the tree, and both sides of a wooden panel fence that marked the boundry. The dogs gave a good indication that there was something at home, at various points of the set, and so we netted up, divided ourselves either side of the fence and then entered my two Jills. It went very quiet for a while, and it seemed to stay quiet for a good few mins, and then suddenly rabbits started to bolt. With so many dogs, the first couple of bolts, they were all a little keen and it was perhaps overkill, the number of canine mouths that tried to swamp the netted rabbits, but soon order was reached, and the dogs worked well, in an area where it would have been difficult to get on top of the rabbits without them. The most memorable catch was probably a double bolt from the same hole, with the first rabbit hitting a net and being snapped up by either Finn or Luna, and the second rabbit which bolted fast on it;s heals, sailing over the dog holding it's mate, straight into the waiting jaws of Gem who was acting as back stop. So first set done, and 8 rabbits bolted, none missed. Nets off and we carried on mooching along the hedge line. I'm not sure why at this point my small whippet decided to pile into Malc1's huge lurcher. A small scuffle later and Finn came away with a hole in his ear and a couple of minor grazes on his face. That dog is an idiot! We soon got another mark a long a gully. Just as we were netting up, the final member of Team Wales, made a belated entry, Old Real Tree, with his whippet Lady. Nets on and ferrets in, a good deal of bumping, and the first rabbit purses a net, then quiet. Then suddenly a rabbit materialises out of thin air and managed to give the dogs the slip straight up the hedge and back into the gully. We still can't work out where it came from, but suspect i hole in a net! Shortly after this the next (and final) rabbit tries to make a bid for escape and is nailed. Nets, off and a mark on the next set a long, which is rapidly netted up, and Ruppert the hob trundles his way down. Within seconds the first rabbit is vacating at speed, Rupert on it's tail. Back down the big lad goes and a couple of moments later, another rabbit tries to sneak out the side, but a well placed net stops him long enough for Murph to get his mouth around coney. At this point, the decision was made to attempt the 'Super Mound' once more, a huge pile of earth, covered in nettles, that runs down into a gully, and probably has something like 100 + holes to it. So with all hands to deck, we made pretty light work of netting everything up, and position ourselves at various points of the mound and gully, spreading the dogs evenly between us. In go six ferrets and they begin to hunt. Quickly, all hell breaks out, and we are all busy. The first rabbit bolts my end and is held by Finn. Then another bolts somewhere at the far end and is grabbed. One comes out the middle, managed to kick the net and disappears into the gully, with dogs on it's tail, moments later you can hear a squeeling from the gully, as Gem makes the catch, a couple more are snagged in the gully, then another caught by the dogs dogs there. During this time, a couple are missed, making their break for freedom into the cover as we are all occupied. Another bolts my end, the net snags on a root and the bunny makes to flee, but is nicely coursed and snatched off the mounds side by Finn. There is one slight hiccup when a fecking huge rat bolts out the gully side and back in, and suddenly everyone is watching what they are grabbing! As the action stops and the ferrets start to show, we do a head count and have taken another eight out of the mound, taking the days total to a nice round twenty! With the nets off and still a little light left, we decide to have a quick wander and see if we can dig up a couple more. We soon get a mark on another set in a road side hedge, with a lot of cover round it, and net up as best we can. In go two jills, and in not too long, the first rabbit bolts into a net right up in the hedge, grabbed by Lala legend, and dispatched. The net is re-layed (luckily), and after a while the second Jill evicts the final bunny of the day in an explosion of leaves, from a hidden bolt hole, taking one look at all the dogs, it think 'f**k THIS!' and makes to dive back to ground, straight into the net that just ruined the day of its mate. Job done, nets off! So a cracking day, in great company, seven happy people, seven happy dogs and a fistful of happy ferrets. All the dogs and ferrets worked very well, and the little nine week old pup was the star of the day, sitting on a ferret box, taking it all in for the future It's unsual going out for a days ferreting with some many people and dogs in attendance, but what a cracking social event it was And to top it off, we went back to Malc and lee's for a lovely cup of tea and a bowl of nice home made stew! Thanks again to Malc, Lee and Liam, can't wait until next time Atb. Great write up mate.............was a good day in great company. Notice how I'm the one doing all the work again.
