When would you rehome injured pup?

Recommended Posts

Following on from my post about my pup breaking both her back legs I had an interesting talk with a mate of mine. Just thought it would be good to get some of your opinions.

For the record my pups staying with me and this is no reference to her whatsoever.

If you was to get a pup that was injured and no longer had a future running/ doing the job you wanted and you was to regime it to a pet home- what stage would you rehome it at?

This got me thinking. If you had a pup that needed treatment such as casts/ operations would you rehome it before the treatment or after it was complete? Which is morally right?

Re homing the dog with potentially a lot of money needed spent on it/ a dog that couldn't walk at that particular time would to me be a bit wrong. I don't know many people that would take on a dog knowing it was going to cost them a good wedge.

On the other side of the coin, after spending hundreds/thousands on vet bills and getting the pup back to full fitness would you then want to give it away knowing that all your investment was tied up in that pup? There would also be the 'what If' that you would ask yourself. Might of made a good runner after all your hard work.

Its a difficult thing to answer but I'm

Sure there would be mixed views on the correct answer. Like I said no reference to my pup as shes staying put but had an interesting debate before on it. Wait for people to say cull it. Out of the questions, what would you do?

My only experience of a "broken" dog, was my Bull X.   Had him out lamping one night, he did too much and blew up, cost me around £1300 (not insured either!) to save his life, and he was no use for

I would get the dog right then see if I could find the right type of person to home it with, if I couldnt I would have it PTS.........if it meant a lot of suffering for the animal in order to get it r

I've held on to two dogs with serious injurys the first came good and despite her injury continued to work into her dotage. The second was a more serious injury resulting in the loss of a leg. Truth

My only experience of a "broken" dog, was my Bull X.

Had him out lamping one night, he did too much and blew up, cost me around £1300 (not insured either!) to save his life, and he was no use for work after (I knew that would be the case after speaking to others)

At the time there was no question about having him PTS, and I definitely wouldn't have passed him on, after all who would want him?

I kept him as a pet, but the simple fact is, he was the worst pet ever, it was his body that was weak, not his drive, turned into the worst couple of years I've ever owned a dog (always had one around me for over 30 years) he was a complete liability, couldn't walk him anywhere near other dogs, he used to attack me me to try and get away, have got the scars to prove it!

Every time I let him out for a piss, he was trying to escape, and was successful a couple of times, had me a nervous wreck!

The last time he escaped, he got hit by a car, and that was the final straw, vet said he might be able to save him, but he'd be even more fecked after, so I had him PTS.

Reason for the story is to say that emotion has no place in a decision, I'd be ruthless if it happened again, and I think you only get to be like that if you've tried the other way.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Same as you dogs stay with me for life, but if quality of life was comprimised and the pup wouldnt have a good quality of life

then i would pts.

I currently have a dog with me on foster - shes a bull x and was very nealy pts before the rescue stepped in,

we do think shes been worked before, when she was found one of her back legs was shot to bits (pellets) and had to be removed,

the rescue has spent quite a bit so far on her, with more to come (spaying, chip, vacc etc)

they wont even get half of that back in the form of a donation when shes rehomed,

not for one second would anyone have said this dog isnt worth spending the money on,

she still has a good quality of life and can (as shes shown me) still do almost anything a 4 legged dog can.

Well i had a similar prob with my first pup.in fact the litter sister to my current dog.only had it 3 days and it broke its back leg.i took it to vets, got al the xrays done and shit, cost me 180quid.then i was told he needed an op and would have a framework on his leg,and would need to be confined to a cage for 8weeks.now i never even considered having it PTS,but if im honest i was not looking forward to keeping a 2month old pu in a cage for 8weeks.luckily the vet manger of the practise i used, called me and she said if i was considering having it pts she would take the pup as her own,as she had took to the wee thing.and thats what i did.so i was lucky that it went to a good home, andd to someone who had the recources and time to spend time with it when it was in cage for all those weeks.

guess what it boils down to is your circumstances, and if your prepared to take the chance.its never a good situation to be in.like SS i dont insure my dogs either.just stick a fiver away a week in case of such bad injuries.
