kenny14 656
Hope this doesn't sound a silly question, but is this something humans are vaccinated against? I know you have the MMR jabs at school etc but didn't know if we had one for this or not? Gaz Unfortunately there's no vaccination against weils disease available for humans. jocky 198
there is a vaccine for weils disease for humans, i had to have it when i was working for the E A . and all pest controlers should have it.. its the HEPATITIS B JAB.it costs about £30, you have one jab then have to go back about a month later for another. go and see your gp. Think you're wrong there mate. Hep B and weils are two different diseases. I've had all the available jabs too because of the nature of my work, and I specifically asked the Doctor who gave them if there was one for weils (this was before I contracted it), and he also said there wasn't. Millet 4,497
They is load's of different strain's of lepto and the vet jab can only cover so many of them..i had a 8yr old terrier die from kidney failure that had killed hundred's of rat's over the year's..it was not lepto that killed her as she fought the disease of her self.. but it caused the damage to the kidney's that could not be fixed. Shazza 52
Hubby works in drainage and he has a jab against weils as he works where rats live. You do have to go to the docs and pay for it though.

It appears some people are mistakenly being told that they've been vaccinated against Weils disease, which could lead to them not being as careful as they should. When I contracted Weils, I learned that many doctors and health staff are very poorly informed on the disease, some had heard of it but didn't know what it was! Heres a link to the health protection agency UK factsheet which gives a pretty good explanation of the disease: http://www.hpa.org.uk/Publications/InfectiousDiseases/Factsheets/factLeptospirosis/
3175darren 1,101
Isnt it strange though how things change, how often so you see kids carrying shot pheasants by the legs, this was a no no when I grew up because of the rats feeding around the feed bins when ratting with ferrets we always wore gloves or washed hands with meths after, people are not as aware now of the disease
Keeps 403
A gamekeeper friend of mine suffered this terrible disease last year. He ended up very poorly on a life support machine in hospital and very nearly lost his life. He's recovered now, but it has taken its toll on him, and he was a very strong and active man. If you spend time outdoors in the countryside, be aware of the flu-like symptoms as described earlier in the thread and go and see a doctor straight away.
Bootsha 1,306
The jabs i use have all the other stuff such as parvo, Distemper etc etc, but they also have in the liquid that you mix up with the dry powder (which in many cases is simply distilled water) 4 different lepto strain vaccines. You can get cheaper, but cutting corners isnt an option when its for your dogs.
Coyotehunter 689
Your better off getting the just LEPTO jab rather than relying on the immunity coming from the multi jabs, like bootsha says there are several strains of Lepto and there's more cross coverage with the single jabs, anyone with working dogs would be advised to have there dog done, even if they don't do any other jabs
