Shazza 52
Thought the Lepto jab was for Weils? Pretty sure it's covered under standard vaccs so were the dogs vaccinated? Sorry to hear of the loss though

HUnter_zero 58
God no I knew a man who died from it,got it while fishing its very bad not many things survive it,sorry to hear about your mates dogs Just like to sort of correct this myth. Anyone who spends time out of doors is at risk of contracting weil's disease, not just from rats but also cattle! The correct name or the name that the doctors will understand is : leptospirosis. Your only defence is knowing the early symptoms of the disease which are: flu-like symptoms with persistent and severe headache. After being out of doors, working on the land, hunting or fishing. If you develop such symptoms go to the doc's and get checked out for Weil's disease. It can be cured if caught early, leave it a few weeks and you are a goner. skycat 6,173
The vaccine doesn't always work: knew a dog who had jabs up to date, got bitten by rats and still caught Leptospirosis and died. Horrible way to die by all accounts.

Horrible way to die by all accounts. I know all vaccines have a small minority that don't provide adequate protection, just thought it a bit unusual to hear of two dogs getting it. Sad all the same. I've had it too, it's like the worst case of flu you can imagine, no coughing or sneezing, but my whole body ached like I'd never felt before. I was also given a massive dose of antibiotics, but I still had bouts of feeling tired, weak and run down for well over a year.
CathNellHarris 4
My brother nearly died from it years ago he was yellow, the hospital didn't know what it was, luckly our GP's wife drove past our farm and saw some rats the suggested they tested for weils desease it came back positive and they cured it, it was lucky he was so fit or he wouldn't have survived. paulus 26
50% of rats carry it and most of you know rats piss constantly so if your out in the countryside theres a very good chance that you will come into contact with it, that doesnt mean you will contract the desiese. but if you do get it, its take a very, very long time to fully recover. i saw a mates dog die of it when i was a kid and it isnt nice infact its horrible. Gaz_1989 9,539
Hope this doesn't sound a silly question, but is this something humans are vaccinated against? I know you have the MMR jabs at school etc but didn't know if we had one for this or not? Gaz
