Neal 1,873
Don't know exactly how much truth there is in this, but heard earlier today on Radio 2 that Prince William has written to FIFA to say he couldn't believe their decision and that England WILL be wearing poppies. What a daft thing to say.....firstly you dont wear a poppy for " pride " its worn to pay respects its not a nationalist thing.....secondly,professional sportsmen are not selected to represent their country based on how patriotic they are they are selected based on how good they are at their chosen sport....... Some people really do take this " lets slag footballers off " stuff a bit too far !

He might be getting mixed up there, the old slogan "wear your poppy WITH pride" Here's a question, have googled it and can't find the answer .............. Abu Dhabi Grand Prix tomorrow ............. How many drivers or cars will have the emblem on? Went into a shop near the pub where I work last night, needed some ciggies, noticed the dark face behind the counter, asked him if he sold poppies, his answer was "no", mine ................... "then you don't sell ciggies either"

gnasher16 30,273
Its worth remembering......10 year ago,20/30/40 years ago poppies were not worn at all by any sportsman during any sporting event.........its only the advent of sophisticated equipment that folk are now crying out for poppies on football shirts, stitched into players boots and what not...... Years ago a football team would have 1 or 2 changes of kit per season.....now they never wear the same shirt twice !...........The wars/conflicts/poppies are nothing new and neither is the meaning of wearing them.....if there wasnt the Iraq/Afghanistan stuff going on would all this poppy thing be as big news as it is anyway,i very much doubt it.....its become almost like a fashion statement i never remember this much emphasis put on wearing a poppy in the 70,s ,s or 90,s
